High School Roundup: Estancia baseball handles Orange

BASEBALL

Estancia 4, Orange 1

ORANGE — Senior pitcher Alex Chairez threw a complete-game two-hitter, striking out six and allowing one earned run in the Eagles’ Costa Mesa Division pool-play game of the Newport Elks Tournament on Thursday.

Steven Macias went one for two with a double and two walks for Estancia (1-0).

Estancia returns to pool-play action on Saturday, when it plays host to Western at 1 p.m.

Newport Harbor 7, Ocean View 2

HUNTINGTON BEACH — Junior pitcher Shaun Vetrovec allowed one hit in five innings and junior Jake Norton hit a two-run home run to pace the visiting Sailors in the opening Foothill Division pool-play game of the Newport Elks Tournament on Thursday.

Vetrovec was two for three for the Sailors, as were Paul Moreno and Daniel Albert.

Norton’s homer broke a 1-1 tie in the fourth inning.

The Tars play host to Beckman on Saturday at 2 p.m.

SOFTBALL

Estancia 22,

La Quinta 15

WESTMINSTER — The visiting Eagles rallied to score the last 15 runs of the game in their nonleague season opener Wednesday.

Estancia senior Rachelle Reynolds hit for the cycle with two home runs, including a grand slam, and nine runs batted in.

Stephanie Enriquez went five for five for Estancia, and Kelly Hinkle pitched a complete game with eight strikeouts.

BOYS’ GOLF

LAGUNA NIGUEL — Brad Tapfer earned medalist honors with a one-over-par 37 for the Sailors who posted two wins in nonleague action at El Niguel Country Club on Thursday.

Newport Harbor (4-0) shot 211, four shots better San Clemente and nine shots better than Aliso Niguel.

Max Meisenheimer (40) led the Tars, followed by Landon Knight (43), Mason Moody (44) and Thomas Terry (47).

NEWPORT BEACH — Senior Chase Wheatley shot one-under-par 34 to earn medalist honors for the host Sea Kings in the nonleague match Thursday at Newport Beach Country Club.

Karick Brown (37), John Hong (40) Brian Hong (40) and Drew Hanson (41) also scored for CdM (3-0), which has won 25 straight dual matches.

CdM plays San Clemente on Tuesday at NBCC.

LONG BEACH — Brad Erhorn shot a six-under-par 42 for the Eagles in a nonleague match at El Dorado Park Golf Course on Thursday.

Courtland Lee finished with a 44, while Aaron Wood (45), Jake Stone (45) and Jake Beth (46) also scored for Estancia (1-2).

COSTA MESA — Senior opposite Joey Mittner finished with five kills for the host Eagles, who dropped their opener, 25-11, 25-14, 25-16, on Thursday.

The Eagles compete at the Lakewood Mayfair tournament on Saturday.

IRVINE — Senior Kent Kawaguchi recorded nine kills and seven assists for the Lightning, who were swept, 25-13, 25-15, 25-13, in the nonleague match on Thursday.

Kyle Jaffe had four digs and six kills for Sage (0-2).

NEWPORT BEACH — Riley Peterson led the host Sailors with three goals, five faceoffs and seven groundballs on Wednesday.

Christian Ruelas had 16 saves for the Sailors, who visit Beckman on Saturday at 4 p.m.
