Newport Harbor 16, Estancia 0 (five innings)

COSTA MESA — Junior Hattie Marshall struck out eight of nine batters she faced for the Sailors in their season opener Tuesday at Estancia High.

Junior Breanna Lopez, freshman Shea Horvath and Marshall each had two runs batted in for the Sailors, and junior Hanna Van Voorhis had two hits, an RBI and a stolen base.

Junior Lauren Gandi pitched two innings in relief, allowing one hit in Coach Russell Hartman’s debut with Newport Harbor. Rachelle Reynolds had the lone Estancia hit.

The Sailors begin play at the Costa Mesa Tournament on Saturday, beginning with a game against the host Mustangs at 9 a.m. at TeWinkle Park.

COSTA MESA — Dylan Gaitan had 13 kills for the Eagles in their 26-24, 25-20, 25-21 season-opening nonleague win Tuesday at Estancia High.

Riley Stack added 12 kills for Estancia, and Anthony Pham had 25 digs.

The Eagles play Marina on Thursday.

COSTA MESA — Nick Hefner had 12 kills for the Mustangs in their 15-25, 25-23, 22-25, 25-19, 15-10, season-opening nonleague victory Tuesday at Costa Mesa High.

Kyle Hefner had 22 assists, while Wyatt Ferris (five blocks), Ryan Webber (four blocks) and James Rjedski (four blocks) also contributed.

The Mustangs play host to Long Beach Millikan on Thursday.

Irvine def. Sage Hill

IRVINE — Sage senior outside hitter Chris Zadra had 11 kills and two blocks in the nonleague season opener Tuesday at Irvine High.

Junior setter Kent Kawaguchi had 16 assists and six kills for the Lightning, who play host to University on Wednesday at 5 p.m.

CORONA DEL MAR — The Sea Kings only gave up two games in singles in their season opener Tuesday.

Junior Alec Adamson swept at love in singles, while CdM’s two highly regarded freshmen Chaz Downing and Henry Gordon dropped just one game each in their sweeps.

In doubles seniors Alex Murray and Zach Williams led the way winning 6-3, 6-1, 6-1.

IRVINE — Senior Robbe Simon recorded a singles win for the Lightning Tuesday.

Junior Ryan Lee and sophomore Eric Magliarditi had a doubles win for Sage Hill (0-2), which will play host to the ninth annual Lightning Invitational this weekend at The Tennis Club of Newport Beach. Teams include Newport Harbor, Tesoro, Sage Hill and Oaks Christian.

Estancia 196, Long Beach Millikan 231

COSTA MESA — Eagles senior Jake Knapp fired a one-under-par 35 for medalist honors in the Eagles’ season opener Tuesday at Mesa Verde.

Jake Stone (37), Aaron Wood (39), Courtland Lee (41) and Davin Ortiz (44) also scored for Estancia.

The Eagles play Santa Margarita on Wednesday at Tijeras Creek.

HUNTINGTON BEACH — Senior John Davenport and junior Chase Wheatley both shot even-par 36 to help the Sea Kings win their season opener at SeaCliff Country Club Tuesday.

Sophomore Hale Furey shot 37, while seniors Brian Mull and Mike Moorhead both shot 39 for CdM (1-0).

The Sea Kings compete against Mission Viejo and Edison Wednesday at Newport Beach Country Club.

COSTA MESA — Nelson Negrillo shot five-over par 41 for medalist honors Tuesday in the Mustangs’ nonleague match at Mesa Linda.

Chris Pawinski shot 48, and Sushil Bhakapa shot 52. Michael Scheidt (53) and Eric Harman (55) also scored for Mesa (1-1), which plays host to Tustin on Wednesday at 2:30 p.m.

Sage Hill 68, Estancia 29

COSTA MESA — Senior Derek Andrews was a double winner for the Eagles in their season opener Tuesday.

Andrews won the 50-yard freestyle in 25.44 and the 100 backstroke in 1 minute, 09.28 seconds. Estancia junior Hayden Swift won the 100 free in 54:68.
