OCC standout first baseman Bryan Garza suffered a broken wrist in the first inning and his status for the rest of the season is up in the air, according to Coach John Altobelli.

The injury occurred when Garza (.417 batting average, 20 hits, 10 doubles, 12 runs, 12 RBI in 12 games) reached for a tailing throw that sent his glove hand right into the oncoming baserunner, injuring his wrist in the process. He was immediately taken out of the game and sent to the hospital for observation.

Other multi-hit producers for the Pirates included Kevin Cho (two for two, one run, one RBIs), Eilert Meyers (two for four, three runs, three RBIs), Jordan Beck (two for three, one run, two RBIs), Austin Wobrock (two for three, two runs), Trent Woodward (two for three, one run, two RBIs), Colton Hamill (two for three, one run, two RBIs) and Blake Hugaert (two for five, one run).

OCC starter Chad Thompson, making his first start of the season since coming off of Tommy John surgery last year, pitched two effective innings, allowing two hits with no walks or strikeouts. Reliever Jed Vandernaald came in and picked up the win to go 2-0, allowing one run over four innings (none earned) with one walk and four strikeouts.

Palomar is 6-5.

The Pirates return to action Thursday at home, against College of the Canyons, beginning at 2 p.m.
