Girls’ Water Polo Roundup: Rivals win easily

The Corona del Mar High and Newport Harbor girls’ water polo teams won easily on Wednesday and continued on their quest to meet in the title match of the CIF Southern Section Division 1 playoffs.

Costa Mesa lost and was eliminated in the first round of Division 1.

CORONA DEL MAR — Senior Stephania Haralabidis had five goals, two assists and three steals for the Sea Kings in the CIF Southern Section Division 1 first-round match Wednesday at CdM.

Seniors Ally McCormick and Ioanna Haralabidis each scored three goals for No. 3-seeded CdM (24-4). Senior Genevieve Weed and junior Marina Coskinas each scored twice, and seniors Morgan Stewart and Cassidy Papa also scored.

Senior goalie Erica Weed had five saves and an assist for CdM, which will play host to Los Alamitos in a Division 1 quarterfinal match Saturday at 11 a.m.

Newport Harbor 18, Canyon 3

NEWPORT BEACH — The No. 4-seeded Sailors eased past Canyon in a CIF Southern Section Division 1 first-round match Wednesday at Newport Harbor High.

Newport Harbor, the defending CIF champion, plays at Laguna Beach in a Division 1 quarterfinal match Saturday at 2 p.m.

The Sailors are now 21-6.

Los Alamitos 17, Costa Mesa 2

COSTA MESA — Seniors Kellie Thorsness and Aubry Hill scored for the Mustangs in the CIF Southern Section Division 1 first-round match Wednesday at Costa Mesa High.

Junior goalie Kaitlyn Hill had seven saves for Costa Mesa, which finishes its season 18-11.

Los Al moves on to play at CdM Saturday in the quarterfinals.
