CdM seventh-graders win

The Corona del Mar seventh-grader boys’ basketball team beat Harbor Day, 61-12, to improve to 5-0 with an average victory margin of 34 points.

The team started the season with wins over Dwyer, 41-24, and TeWinkle, 36-6. Next the team defeated Sowers, 62-21, and Costa Mesa, 43-22.

Garrett White and Sam Kobrine lead the team in scoring with Matt Ctvrtlik, Nick Premer and Karl Donavan playing key roles. Other team members are Ben Brooks, Brian Chelf, Ryan Cousins, Jordan Hauser, Kevin McCarthy, Ford Secrist, Stephen Von Der Ahe and Tommy Winkle.

Basketball

Newport-Mesa 61, North Tustin 58

The Newport-Mesa Tar Heels improved to 8-3 and recaptured first place in the division with a big win over visiting North Tustin.

Cole Norris had his best game of the season with 17 points, four rebounds and two assists, while Kevin Fults added 12 points and four rebounds.

Coach Scott Stucki was impressed with the overall team balance. “This was the biggest win of the season for our squad,” he said.

Augie Miller had his best game of the season with six points and 10 rebounds while playing stingy defense against the league’s best big man from North Tustin.

Charlie Evans (six points, four rebounds), Max Kline (eight points, two steals), Riley Gaddis (seven points, two steals), Justin Hess (two points, three rebounds), Caleb O’Neil (four rebounds) and Max Stanley (three points, two assists) played key roles in the big win Sunday. Logan Miller was injured and unavailable to play.

Jayhawks 53, Lakers 39

The Jayhawks improved to 7-2. The Jayhawks’ balanced offense included four players in double-digits, led by Jake Hastings with 13 points and five assists. Big man Clayton Johnston put in 11 points while grabbing nine rebounds. Ricky Luehrs and Derek Mathuny scored 11 and 10 points, respectively, while Donato DiFerdinando rounded out the scoring with six points.

Patrick Halle sparked the Lakers’ offense with a game-high 21 points. Cole Thomas and Mitch Dean contributed five points apiece. Matt Alessi helped his team early, with four points in the first half.

Globetrotters 60, Wolverines 51

National Junior Basketball

Fifth- sixth-grade boys Newport-Mesa

John Holland scored 12 rebounds and had two steals for the Globetrotters in their come-from-behind win. Chase McGrath (eight points, six rebounds), Cameron Kormos (19 points, five rebounds) and Grant Joyce (15 points, nine of which were free throws) were also key.

Dan Bailey scored eight points, Levi Fernandez played great defense, Morgan Derifield grabbed a season-high five rebounds.

Newport-Mesa Irish win again

The Newport-Mesa Irish seventh-grade All-Net basketball team continued an undefeated streak in league with a 47-22 win over Villa Park.

The team, which is 8-0, saw every player score and was led by Jack Van Dalsem with 12 points and nine rebounds followed by Kevin McCarthy with nine points. Robbie Hurst was instrumental in the victory with five steals and seven points, while Stephen Von Der Ahe had 10 rebounds. Calvin Cho sank two three-pointers, while Ryan Cousens scored four and Benny Brooks under the basket was a presence with five rebounds. Injured on the sideline was Brian Chelf.
