College Roundup: UCI’s Tsurumoto scores career-high 27 points in win

UC Irvine 64, Hawaii 52

IRVINE — Junior guard Jennifer Tsurumoto scored a career-high 27 points for the Anteaters in the Big West Conference game at the Bren Events Center Saturday.

Tsurumoto shot seven for 13 from the floor, including hitting three three-pointers and was 10 of 12 from the free-throw line. She also recorded four assists, a block and steal in 37 minutes of action. Junior guard Kelly Meggs added 12 points, while junior forward Camille Buckley had 11 points and a team-high seven rebounds for UCI (6-17, 2-9 in conference). Methlyn Onogomuho pitched in six points and three steals and Pernilla Hanson and Lauren Spinazze each had three points in the win. Jasmine Bernard added two points and Mokun Fajemisin had five rebounds.

The Anteaters shot 60% from the floor in the second half (12-20) and ended the night 42.9% (21-49) overall. UCI hit eight three-pointers, while Hawaii went four for 20 from three-point range. The Rainbow Wahine shot 31% (18-58) from the field and 70.6% (12-17) from the line. Hawaii out-rebounded UCI, 42-33.

Hawaii is 11-11, 7-4.

UCI plays at UC Riverside Thursday at 7 p.m.

Vanguard 101, Arizona Christian 50

PHOENIX, Ariz. — Nicole Ballestero scored a game-high 39 points for the No. 3-ranked Lions in the Golden State Athletic Conference game Saturday.

Maree Drennan (15 points, 11 rebounds), Esther Timmermans (eight points, 16 rebounds), Leigha Bednar (13 points) and Chelsea Alfafara (12 points) also contributed for Vanguard (17-2, 8-2 in conference).

Arizona Christian is 4-18, 0-10.

Orange Coast 77, Santa Ana 57

SANTA ANA — Jenna Arnett had 27 points and 11 rebounds to lead the Pirates in the Orange Empire Conferece game Friday night.

The Pirates (12-14, 3-7 in conference) outrebounded the Dons (9-17, 1-9) 55-33 in the game, enabling the guests to pick up easy points down low on first and second opportunities.

Coast notched 29 second-chance points and scored 24 points in the paint, with Arnett leading the way.

The sophomore forward finished the game 11 of 18 from the floor and five for five from the free-throw line.

Caitlin Bunting scored 14 points and Dayanara Armenta had 13 points.

Michelle Angel had seven points, eight rebounds and seven assists.

MEN’S BASKETBALL

Hawaii 78, UC Irvine 72

HONOLULU, Hawaii — Hawaii capitalized on a 14-0 run in the second half to erase a seven-point deficit in the Big West Conference game Saturday night.

A three-pointer by UCI’s Mike Wilder with 16:47 left gave the Anteaters a 42-35 lead, but UCI went scoreless over the next seven minutes as Hawaii took a 49-42 lead on a basket by Christian Standhardinger with 11:28 remaining.

UCI led 34-31 at halftime on the strength of 10 points from Daman Starring in the opening 20 minutes.

Standhardinger led Hawaii (15-9, 9-4 in conference) with 20 points, Hauns Brereton had 16 and Vander Joaquim added 15 points and 10 rebounds. The Warriors hit 11 of 12 free throws in the final 1:28.

Freshman point guard Alex Young led UCI (12-13, 6-6) with a career-high 20 points and added seven assists. Starring scored 18 points and Chris McNealy added 10.

The Anteaters play host to UC Riverside Wednesday night at 7 at the Bren Center, where UCI is 8-1 this season, including 5-0 in Big West games.

Arizona Christian 82, Vanguard 71

PHOENIX, Ariz. — Preston Wynne scored a game-high 24 points for the Lions in the Golden State Athletic Conference game Saturday.

Chris Gorman added 10 points for Vanguard (15-10, 4-6 in conference).

Arizona Christian is 16-6, 6-4.

MEN’S VOLLEYBALL

UC Irvine def. Pacific

STOCKTON — The top-ranked Anteaters extended their winning streak to six with a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation sweep of No. 11 Pacific, 25-16, 25-15, 25-21, at the Alex G. Spanos Center Saturday evening.

All-American outside hitter Kevin Tillie paced UCI with 14 kills, three aces and a season-high 11 digs for UCI (10-3, 7-3 in the MPSF).

Opposite Zack La Cavera put away 10 kills, while setter Daniel Stork had 31 set assists and a match-high six blocks. Outside hitter Jeremy Dejno recorded seven kills and middle blocker Scott Kevorken had six kills with libero Michael Brinkley adding eight digs in the win.

Pacific (5-4, 3-4) hit .105 as a team.

UCI plays host to UC Santa Barbara Thursday at 7 p.m. in the Bren Center.

BASEBALL

Doubleheader

COSTA MESA — Host Vanguard University earned a 4-2 victory in the seven-inning Game 2 to salvage a Golden State Athletic Conference split against Westmont after falling, 10-2, in the nine-inning first game on Saturday.

Taylor McKnight drove in the winning run when he reached on a fielder’s choice in the bottom of the sixth of Game 2.

John Collins’ drove in the final run of the 4-2 victory with an RBI single.

Richard Perry allowed one earned run on four hits in six innings to get the win for Vanguard, for which Kevin Ponzo worked a scoreless seventh for his fourth save.

Matt Avery was three for four, while Jason Ochart went two for four with two RBIs to highlight Vanguard in the opening game.

Vanguard is 5-2, 2-3 and Westmont is 7-5, 4-4.

Simpson Tournament

REDDING — The Lions earned one win and lost two games on Saturday.

Vanguard (4-4) beat Southern Oregon, 10-1. The Lions lost to Oregon Institute of Technology, 2-1. Vanguard lost to Eastern Oregon, 7-4.

MEN’S TENNIS

Vanguard 8, Concordia 1

COSTA MESA — Third-ranked Vanguard posted a dominant victory over fifth-ranked Concordia.

In the No. 1 singles match-up Vanguard’s Stefan Kilchhofer made quick work of Concordia’s Bruno Kliskinic (6-3, 6-0) in the Golden State Athletic Conference match Saturday.

The Lions’ Roger Muri defeated Christ Wickenhauser in the #2 slot (6-2, 6-2) and Lukas Larsson claimed a clutch three-set win in the No. 3 position over the Eagles’ Marc Reddmann.

The fourth individual match saw VU’s Robin Wagner take down Micah Groom 6-3, 6-1 while Yahor Kryvaruchka tallied the final singles’ point when he bested Concordia’s Patrick Szeremeta at the #5 spot.

The Pride captured all three doubles points on the afternoon. Kilchhofer and Larsson had no problem with Concordia’s No. 1 duo of Wickenhauser and Groom, earning the 8-1 victory to begin pairs’ play. At No. 2 doubles Vanguard’s Muri and Wagner battled past Szeremeta and Reddman, 8-4, while Rosiak and Kryvaruchka stole the final point of the day, 8-5.

With the win the Lions improve to 2-0 overall and 1-0 in conference play. Concordia drops to 1-2 on the season and 0-1 in GSAC matches.

The Pride will play host to Biola on Tuesday at 2 p.m. in their GSAC home opener.

WOMEN’S TENNIS

Concordia 7, Vanguard 2

COSTA MESA — The 10th-ranked Lions drop to 0-3 with the defeat, while fifth-ranked Concordia moved to 1-2 overall in the Golden State Athletic Conference opener Saturday.

The Pride’s No. 1 individual player Juliet Labarthe proved her worth, pulling off a three-set win over Concordia’s Elizaveta Ignatova (2-6, 6-3, 6-2). In the No. 2 slot Nina Pudar picked up VU’s second point with a 7-5, 6-2 victory over the Eagles’ Ulrike Hahn.

Vanguard’s Gabriele Alford got off to a good start at No. 4 but was eventually beaten in three sets by CUI’s Summer Beaird.

The Eagles swept all three doubles points to begin the day.

WOMEN’S INDOOR TRACK & FIELD

Husky Classic

SEATTLE, Wash. — UC Irvine sophomore Itos Aikhionbare continued her impressive indoor season Saturday.

Aikhionbare finished fourth in the shot put with a mark of 47 feet, 1½ inches on the final day of action at Dempsey Indoor for her third top-five finish in as many meets this season.

UCI’s Maggie McDuffee placed fifth in the 3,000 meters in 10 minutes, 16.62 seconds, and Carlotta Pham also was in the top 10, finishing ninth in 10:19.92.

Kaycee Holcomb won her section of the mile run and placed ninth overall in 5:01.99 and Samia Sailinuu was 16th in 5:04.79.

Sakia Sailinuu (2:16.03) and Chelsea Schneider (2:18.94) each placed sixth in their respective sections of the 800 meters.

Kaulyn Lee-McNeill had the Anteaters’ top time in the 400 meters at 59.64, while Melanie Speech and Charity Lyons had marks of 16-4½ and 16-3¾, respectively, in the long jump.

UCI returns to Seattle in two weeks for the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Indoor Championship Feb. 22-23.
