College Roundup: UCI falls to Pacific

Pacific 72, UC Irvine 64

IRVINE — Derick Flowers sank a three-pointer with 7:23 left to pull the host Anteaters within 59-57 in the Big West Conference game Saturday.

But UCI missed its next 10 three-point attempts before Chris McNealy connected from beyond the arc with 13 seconds left, by which time the Tigers (9-13, 5-5 in conference) had pulled away.

UCI made just six of 35 three-point tries (17.1%) to drop to 9-14, 5-5. There is a three-way tie for fourth place in the Big West with UCI, Pacific and UC Riverside.

Mike Wilder led five UCI scorers in double figures with 12 points.

Will Davis was five for five from the field, all in the first half, but fouled out after playing just nine minutes after halftime.

Adam Folker was five for six from the field to finish with 11 points.

UCI, which dropped its fourth home conference game this season, plays four of its final six Big West games on the road, beginning Thursday at Cal State Fullerton.

BASEBALL

Doubleheader

COSTA MESA — Orange Coast swept Cuesta, winning the nonconference games, 3-2, and, 12-6, Saturday.

Left-fielder Chris Carlson went two for two with one run and a run batted in, while center-fielder Boog Powell and second baseman Justin Broussard both went two for three for the Pirates in the first game.

Keegan Yuhl pitched six innings. He struck out six, walked four and allowed seven hits and two runs.

In the nightcap, Powell (two for five), right-fielder Bijan Rademacher (two for four) and first baseman Eilert Meyers (one for four) had two RBIs each. Carlson went two for four with an RBI and third baseman Ben Agredano went two for three to help OCC improve to 3-0.

Cuesta is 0-3.

The Pirates play host to Long Beach City College Tuesday at 2 p.m.

SOFTBALL

Vanguard

COSTA MESA — The Lions remained unbeaten after sweeping nonconference doubleheaders Friday and Saturday.

Vanguard (6-0) beat Pomona-Pitzer, 3-1, and 11-5, Saturday.

Vanguard starter Stacie Salazar struck out 10 and earned her second win of the year in the opener. She walked none and allowed five hits and one run.

Elizabeth Archer had two runs batted in, while Adriana Venezia went two for three and Brittany Colenzo went two for two with two runs scored.

In the nightcap, Kimberly Skoglund (one for three), Brittney Boggs (two for three) and Gabrielle Jackson (two for three) had two RBIs each for the Lions.

Kari Bergerson (two runs) and Breanne Gomez (one RBI) both went two for four.

Pomona-Pitzer fell to 2-2.

Against La Sierra, pitcher Shelby Ross had a no-hitter with five strikeouts and two walks in a 8-0 win in the nightcap.

Venezia had two RBIs, while Taylor Hallahan and Archer both went two for three with two runs each.

Rachel Stalford struck out nine and allowed one run and five hits to lead Vanguard to a 2-1 win. Venezia had two RBIs.

WOMEN’S TENNIS

UC Irvine 6, BYU 1

IRVINE — No. 1 singles player Courtney Byron won, 4-6, 6-3, 6-1, leading four Anteaters who earned singles victories in the nonconference match Saturday.

Kristina Smith won, 6-2, 6-4, at No. 2 singles; Franziska Goettsching won, 6-2, 6-2, at No. 2 singles; and Hanna Holladay won, 6-3, 3-6, 6-1 at No. six singles for UCI (2-2).

Byron and Holladay teamed up to win at No. 1 singles, 9-8 (7), and Goettsching and Smith won at No. 2 singles, 9-7.

The Anteaters play host to Hawaii Thursday at 1:30 p.m.
