College Roundup: UCI women earn first Big West win

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

UC Irvine 70, UC Davis 57

DAVIS — Junior Camille Buckley had a career-high 22 rebounds and junior Jennifer Tsurumoto had a career-high 19 points to help the visiting Anteaters earn their first Big West Conference victory on Saturday.

Buckley, who scored 15 points, missed tying the school record by one rebound. Her 22 boards are tied for the most by a Big West player this season.

Tsurumoto made three of six three-point attempts, all eight free-throw tries and added a team-best five assists as UCI (5-16, 1-8) snapped an eight-game losing streak.

Kelly Meggs had 13 points, while P.J. Hanson chipped in eight points and eight rebounds and Mokun Fajemisin had seven rebounds and six points for UCI, which led wire-to-wire.

The starting five for UC Davis (9-11, 4-5) was 12 for 42 from the field (28.6%).

Vanguard 72, Biola 61

COSTA MESA — Nicole Ballestero scored a game-high 36 points to lead the No. 4-ranked Lions in the Golden State Athletic conference game Saturday.

Ballestero shot 10 of 14 from the field, hit two of three three-pointers and made 14 of her 16 free throws. She also had five rebounds, three steals and two assists.

Esther Timmermans scored 14 points for Vanguard (16-1, 7-1 in conference).

Biola is 11-12, 2-6.

BASEBALL

Doubleheader

SAN LUIS OBISPO — Pitching carried the day as Orange Coast College earned a nonconference split at Cuesta on Saturday.

Sophomore Dallas Draviczki allowed one run and five hits in 6 1/3 innings to help OCC win the seven-inning second game, 3-1, after the Cougars prevailed in the opener, 2-1.

David Longville got the final two outs for his first save as Manny Argomaniz and Steve Pollakov both drove in runs during a three-run sixth in the Pirates’ victory.

In the opener, OCC was limited to five hits by Cuesta starter Lucas Martin, who struck out four and did not walk a batter in a complete-game effort.

Zach Nehrir went two for three with an RBI in the first game for OCC and was three for six in the doubleheader.

OCC’s Kyle Dowdy allowed one hit and no earned runs in six innings. He walked five and struck out six.

OCC (2-1), ranked No. 3 in Southern California, visit College of the Canyons on Wednesday at 2 p.m.

MEN’S BASKETBALL

Vanguard 71, Biola 58

COSTA MESA — Preston Wynne scored a game-high 20 points for the Lions in the Golden State Athletic Conference game Saturday.

Ennis Whatley Jr. added 18 points and Chris Gorman had 12 points for Vanguard (15-8, 4-4 in conference).

Biola is 12-12, 2-6.

WOMEN’S WATER POLO

Cal Baptist tournament

RIVERSIDE — UC Irvine defeated host Cal Baptist, 10-3, after topping Cal State Bakersfield, 11-6, in tournament play Saturday at Cal Baptist.

Taylor Morrison and Emily Carlson had two goals each and Annika Nelson made 11 saves against Cal Baptist.

The ‘Eaters broke open a 6-6 tie by outscoring Cal State Bakersfield, 5-0, in the fourth quarter.

McKenna Mitchell led the winners with three goals and Jillian Yocum had 10 saves against the Roadrunners.

No. 6-ranked UCI is 4-2.
