College Roundup: OCC baseball opens season with win

Orange Coast 7, Cuesta 1

SAN LUIS OBISPO — Sophomore shortstop Manny Argomaniz drove in three runs to pace five Pirates who had two hits in the nonconference season opener Friday at Cuesta College.

Argomaniz was two for four and scored a run as Evan Porcella worked five shutout innings to earn the pitching victory.

Sophomores Ricky Navarro and Zach Nehrir were two for three, while sophomore Danny Jiminez and freshman Cody Bruder were both two for five. Jiminez and Nehrir each had one run batted in, as did freshman Cristian Salina, who was one for four and scored twice.

Porcella allowed four hits and walked two, while sophomore Garrett Hartwell worked two innings of hitless relief.

OCC, ranked No. 3 in Southern California, and No. 4-ranked Cuesta are scheduled to play a doubleheader Saturday.

Arizona Christian 5, Vanguard 2

PHOENIX, Ariz. — Senior center fielder Matt Avery went two for four with one home run and senior shortstop Bryce Arroyo was two for four to lead the visiting Lions in Vanguard’s Golden State Athletic Conference opener on Friday.

Travis Tomsen allowed three earned runs on six hits in five innings to absorb the loss and fall to 1-1 for Vanguard (2-1, 0-1 in conference).

Vanguard had all five of the game’s errors and was outhit, 9-8.

Arizona Christian, a first-year GSAC member, is 2-2, 2-2.

Santa Barbara def. Orange Coast

SANTA BARBARA — The visiting Pirates fell, 26-24, 25-17, 22-25, 25-22, in the nonconference match Friday.

Both teams are now 1-1.

OCC plays host to El Camino Tuesday at 6 p.m.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

Saddleback 53, Orange Coast 49

COSTA MESA — The host Pirates closed within 50-49 with 13 seconds left, but Saddleback made three foul shots to secure the Orange Empire Conference win Friday.

Dayanara Armenta led OCC (11-13, 2-6 in conference) with 13 points, while Michelle Angel had 11 points, seven assists and six rebounds and Jenna Arnett had nine points and nine rebounds.

The Pirates play host to Irvine Valley Wednesday at 7:30 p.m.

Saddleback is 13-12, 4-4.

MEN’S BASKETBALL

Saddleback 66, Orange Coast 59

COSTA MESA — Marquis Ransom had 15 points and Jordan Pellum added 12 for the host Pirates in the Orange Empire Conference game Friday.

OCC is 10-13, 1-7 in conference and Saddleback is 21-4, 8-0.

The Pirates play host to Irvine Valley Wednesday at 5:30 p.m.

WOMEN’S TENNIS

UCLA 5, UC Irvine 2

LOS ANGELES — Sarah Gong won at No. 4 singles and Sarah Stadfelt earned a victory at No. 6 singles for the Anteaters’ points in the nonconference road match Friday.

UCI fell to 2-3, while the No. 2-ranked Bruins are 3-0.
