Vanguard’s Gorman, Ballestero honored

Vanguard University basketball standouts Chris Gorman (men’s) and Nicole Ballestero (women’s) were named Golden State Athletic Conference Players of the Week on Monday.

Gorman, a sophomore point guard, scored a combined 62 points in an 82-81 conference loss at Concordia on Jan. 22 and an 80-78 GSAC road setback against No 15-ranked Hope International on Saturday.

Gorman made 24 of 30 field-goal attempts for the week (80%), including 10 of 11 from three-point range (90.9%).

Ballestero, a junior guard, helped the No. 3-ranked Lions earn road wins against Concordia (Jan. 22) and Hope International (Saturday). She averaged 22.5 points in the two games and collected a combined 13 rebounds, 10 assists and four steals. She made 16 of 30 field-goal attempts (53.3%), was four for nine form three-point range and nine of 13 from the foul line.

The Vanguard women (15-1, 6-1 in conference) play host to Biola on Saturday at 5:30 p.m. They take on GSAC-leading Westmont (7-0 in conference play) on Tuesday in Santa Barbara.

The Vanguard men take a 14-8, 3-4 mark into Saturday’s home game against Biola at 7:30 p.m.
