MEN’S BASKETBALL

UC Davis 108, UC Irvine 107 (2OT)

DAVIS — Junior Eric Wise scored a career-high 34 points and added 12 rebounds for the visiting Anteaters in the dramatic Big West Conference game Saturday.

Wise left the game early in the second overtime with an undetermined leg injury and Davis (8-12, 3-5 in conference) led most of the overtime, behind 10 points from Mark Payne.

After Patrick Rembert’s driving bank shot gave UCI (10-12, 3-5) a 107-106 lead with 4.2 seconds left, Payne fielded a long pass and made a layup while being fouled with 2.1 seconds remaining.

Payne, who led the winners with 32 points, missed the foul shot and Chris McNealy’s subsequent full-court heave missed as time expired.

Rembert had 19 points and McNealy had 13 for UCI, which had won two straight conference road games coming in.

Mike Wilder hit a three-pointer with 24 seconds left to pull UCI within 106-105.

The five Davis starters combined for 102 points.

Davis was 13 for 28 from three-point range, while UCI was four for 15. UCI was 21 of 35 from the foul line and UC Davis was 21 for 32.

BASEBALL

Doubleheader

COSTA MESA — Vanguard scored in the bottom of the ninth to win the first game, 2-1, over Cal State San Marcos, but fell in the seven-inning second game, 7-2, in nonconference play Saturday.

Tony Peraza allowed four hits and no earned runs in 7 1/3 innings of the first game, in which Kyle Hardman had the lone run batted in for VU. Robert Purpura threw 1 1/3 inning of scoreless relief to earn the win.

In the second game, Tyson Leighton and Ethan Harper had RBIs for the Lions (2-2), who had nine combined hits in the two games.

San Marcos is 2-1.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

Vanguard 72, Fresno Pacific 53

COSTA MESA — Senior Molly Pfohl had 10 points and seven rebounds to lead the host Lions in the Golden State Athletic Conference game Saturday.

Chelsea Alfafara (19 points, including five-of-nine shooting from three-point range), Danielle Arriola (14 points), Allison Burns (10 points) and Sarah Boyd (10 assists) also helped the No. 12-ranked Lions improve to 12-6, 8-4 in conference.

FPU is 7-15, 0-12.

TRACK AND FIELD

UW Indoor Invitational

SEATTLE, Wash. - UC Irvine senior Alisha Misiaita won the shot put at the UW Indoor Invitational in Seattle Saturday.

Misiaita won the 29-competitor event with an NCAA provisional-qualifying mark of 50-2 1/2 at Dempsey Indoor. Jean Lightfoot of UC Santa Barbara was second at 48-6.

It was Misiaita’s second straight victory in as many meets this season.

MEN’S VOLLEYBALL

BYU def. UC Irvine

PROVO, Utah — The No. 3-ranked host Cougars swept, 25-17, 25-22, 25-21, in Mountain Pacific Sports Federation play Saturday.

Cory Yoder (who hit .450) and Carson Clark had 12 kills each to lead the No. 7-ranked Anteaters (4-6, 2-4 in conference).

BYU, which also swept UCI on Friday, is 7-2, 4-2.

Long Beach tournament

LONG BEACH — Orange Coast College fell to the host Vikings, 25-22, in the title match of the 12-team tournament completed Saturday at Long Beach City College.

OCC won its four-team pool, topping El Camino, 25-17, 20-25, 15-13, sweeping Santa Barbara, 23-15, 25-22, and handling the Long Beach alumni squad, 25-21, 25-19.

The Pirates defeated Moorpark, 25-19 in the semifinals, a rematch of the state title match won last spring by Moorpark.

MEN’S BASKETBALL

Fresno Pacific 69, Vanguard 65

COSTA MESA — Senior Alex Chapman had 22 points and 10 rebounds to pace the host Lions in the Golden State Athletic Conference contest Saturday.

Vanguard, four for 21 from three-point range (19%), fell to 5-15, 3-9 in conference.

FPU, eight of 14 on three-point tries, is 13-8, 6-6.

MEN’S TENNIS

UC Irvine 6, South Carolina 1

COLUMBUS, Ohio — Four Anteaters won in singles and doubles in the first round of the ITA Kickoff Weekend on Saturday.

Chris Kearney (No. 1 singles), Sam Gould (No. 2), Stephen Stege (No. 6) and Shan Sondhu (No. 6) all won in singles and doubles for UCI (1-2).

Fabian Matthews (No. 5) was also victorious in singles for the ‘Eaters, who face No. 4-ranked Ohio State today.

UC Riverside 5, Vanguard 2

RIVERSIDE — Lucas Pereira (No. 1) and Alexandre Piccin (No.6) earned singles wins to account for the Lions two points in the nonconference road match Saturday.

Pereira defeated Felix Macherez, 6-3, 7-5, and Piccin bested Kevin Griffin, 6-4, 1-6, 6-1.

WOMEN’S WATER POLO

UC Santa Barbara tournament

SANTA BARBARA — UC Irvine split two games and Vanguard dropped one on the first day of the event at UC Santa Barbara.

UCI defeated Concordia, 21-3, behind four goals from Cortney Collyer, then fell to Michigan, 13-11, as Collyer was one of five Anteaters with two goals.

Vanguard lost to UC San Diego, 24-5.
