COSTA MESA — Samantha Doucette scored 19 points for the Lions, ranked No. 4 in the NAIA, in the Golden State Athletic Conference game Tuesday.

Esther Timmermans (13 rebounds) and Nicole Ballestero scored 17 points each and Alison Drennan had 11 points and 10 rebounds for Vanguard (15-1, 6-1 in conference).

The Master’s, ranked No. 9, is 19-2, 5-2.

The Lions outrebounded The Master’s, 49-35.

Vanguard 81, The Master’s 70

COSTA MESA — Preston Wynne and Taylor Kelly scored 21 and 20 points, respectively, for the Lions in the Golden State Athletic Conference game Tuesday.

Ennis Whatley Jr. and Chris Gorman scored 12 pionts each and Selle Han added 10 points for Vanguard (14-8, 3-4 in conference).

The Master’s is 13-9, 2-5.

MEN’S GOLF

Riverside Invitational

RIVERSIDE — The Orange Coast College men’s golf team came out strong at the season-opening Riverside Invitational and topped the 13-team event with a team score of 376 on Monday at Victoria Country Club.

OCC shot an impressive 376, 11 shots ahead of runner-up Cuyamaca and 12 ahead of third-place Cypress. College of the Desert (391) and El Camino (397) rounded out the top five.

“Our first match went well,” head coach Sean Collins said. “It was a little cold, a bit of wind and some tough course conditions, but we are off to a good start.”

The low round of the day went to Pirate standout Jem Young, who shot a one-over-par 73. All six golfers were within four shots of each other.

Kyle Melchiorre and Michael Chen both carded a 75, while Marcus Mercado-Kiel came in with a 76 and Kyle Pollema and Riley Murphy each scored a 77.

The Pirates will compete in the two-round Orange Empire Conference Classic, which begins on Monday at 7 a.m. and will continue on Wednesday at 7 a.m. at Los Serranos Golf and Country Club in Chino Hills.
