COSTA MESA — Amanda Young produced the Lions’ lone hit in their nonconference season opener Friday.

SAN MARCOS — Brandon Young went two for four with one run batted in and two runs for the Lions in the nonconference game Friday.

Cal State San Marcos (1-0) rallied with four runs in the bottom of the ninth to win in its first on-campus baseball game in front of its largest crowd in school history, 787.

Dyle Hardman and Tyson Leighton had two RBIs each for Vanguard (1-1).

MEN’S VOLLEYBALL

BYU def. UC Irvine

PROVO, Utah — Cory Yoder had 15 kills to lead the No. 7-ranked Anteaters in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation match Friday.

The No. 3-ranked Cougars (6-2, 3-2 in the MPSF) defeated UCI, 25-22, 25-15, 25-17.

Carson Clark had 13 kills, while Anthony Spittle had 34 assists for the Anteaters (4-5, 2-3).

UW Indoor Invitational

SEATTLE, Wash. — The UC Irvine “A” quartet of Tierra Gilmore, Sakia Sailinuu, Maggie Newton-Neal and Chloe Fata placed eighth in the distance medley relay Friday night.

UCI finished with a time of 12:24.37 at Dempsey Indoor.

The Anteaters also ran a “B” relay of Lacey Surak, Chelsea Schneider, Shelby Pock and Colleen Lillig that placed 10th in 12:39.27.

Oregon won the event in a Dempsey Indoor-record time of 11:02.15.
