Briefs: Six locals collect All-CIF honors

Newport Harbor High senior outside hitter Cinnamon Sary and senior libero Tatum Norton, Corona del Mar senior middle blocker Britton Taylor and junior setter Kelsey Humphreys, and Sage Hill School senior middle blocker Zoe Kreitenberg and freshman Halland McKenna each received All-CIF Southern Section recognition in their respective divisions for helping their girls’ volleyball teams qualify for section championship matches.

Sary and Norton led the Sailors (26-10) to the Division I-AA title match, the program’s second appearance in three years. Los Alamitos defeated the Sailors, 25-17, 26-24, 25-23, in the section final.

Taylor and Humphreys helped the Sea Kings (32-5) advance to the Division I-A title match, the program’s third final appearance in four years. Marymount of Los Angeles beat CdM, 27-25, 21-25, 23-25, 25-18, 15-12.

Kreitenberg and McKenna guided the Lightning (25-6) to a Division IV-AA title. Sage Hill defeated rival St. Margaret’s, 27-29, 25-21, 22-25, 25-18, 15-9, to claim the school’s second section crown.

Corona del Mar Coach Marissa Booker and Sage Hill Coach Dan Thomassen were named Coach of the Year, respectively, in Division I-A and Division IV-AA.

Sary, who is a repeat All-CIF pick, finished with 452 kills, 183 assists, 112 digs, 29 blocks, 20 service aces. She is bound for USC.

Norton had 278 digs and 23 aces.

Taylor, who shared Pacific Coast League MVP laurels after the Sea Kings finished first in league, finished with 303 kills and 57 blocks.

Taylor and Humphreys helped CdM defeat Newport Harbor in the Battle of the Bay rivalry for the second straight year.

Humphreys tallied 866 assists, 164 digs, 60 kills, 41 aces and 32 blocks.

Kreitenberg finished with 304 kills and 46 blocks, to go with 52 service aces. Kreitenberg, who is bound for Army, was the Academy League Co-MVP after Sage Hill finished tied for first in league.

McKenna had 233 kills, 281 digs and 71 aces.

Three locals lauded

Costa Mesa High middle linebacker Oronde Crenshaw and Newport Harbor left tackle Sam Bush each made the Cal-Hi Sports All-State Underclassmen first team sophomores in football, while Estancia running back Robert Murtha was a third-team honoree among juniors.

Crenshaw, a first-team All-Orange Coast League and Newport-Mesa Dream Team pick, led the area with 130 tackles. He had eight tackles for losses, five sacks and two interceptions. He returned one interception for a touchdown.

Crenshaw kept Costa Mesa (8-3, 4-1 in league) in contention for a league title in the regular-season finale and return to the Southern Division playoffs after missing the postseason in 2010.

Bush, a second-team All-Sunset League and Newport-Mesa Dream Team selection, helped Newport Harbor (5-6, 3-2 in league) place third in league and reach the Pac-5 Division playoffs.

Murtha, who earned All-CIF Southern Section Southern Division honors and the Orange Coast League Offensive Player of the Year and Daily Pilot Newport-Mesa Dream Team Offensive Player of the Year awards, rushed for a single-season school record 2,216 yards and 20 touchdowns.

Murtha led the Eagles (10-3, 5-0 in league) to back-to-back undefeated league titles and their first trip to the CIF Southern Section semifinals.
