Big heavyweight bout coming to Costa Mesa

Share

A cable station is broadcasting an event from Orange County in March and it has nothing to do with The Real Housewives of Orange County.

HBO, not Bravo, will broadcast Chris Arreola’s heavyweight bout at the OC Fair and Event Center in Costa Mesa on March 9. The fight inside the Hangar against Bermane Stiverne will be Arreola’s first in over a year.

A win by Arreola might set up a rematch against World Boxing Council heavyweight champion Vitali Klitschko. Arreola, who is 35-2 with 30 knockouts, lost to Klitschko in 2009 at Staples Center, where Klitschko dominated, forcing Arreola’s corner to stop the fight after the 10th round.

Since Klitschko handed Arreola his first loss, Arreola, who’s from Riverside, won eight of his next nine fights.

A press conference to announce the upcoming WBC heavyweight title elimination bout between Arreola and Stiverne (22-1-1, 20 knockouts) is on Wednesday in Sherman Oaks at 11:30 a.m.

Roy Englebrecht, a Newport Beach-based promoter, said he has been hired by Goossen Tutor Promotions to sell the fight locally. Tickets will go on sale at https://www.fightcluboc.com on Friday at 9 a.m.

“This is the biggest show to come to the OC in years, and the first HBO show out of Costa Mesa,” Englebrecht said in an email.
