College Roundup: UCI drops third straight

PROVO, Utah — The top-ranked UC Irvine men’s volleyball team fell at No. 3-ranked BYU, 25-20, 25-23, 19-25, 25-22, in Mountain Pacific Sports Federation action Friday to extend its losing streak to three matches.

UCI (4-3, 1-3 in conference) was led by senior All-American outside hitter Kevin Tillie who had a season-best 19 kills.

Junior outside hitter Jeremy Dejno had 16 kills and a team-high 10 digs, while UCI teammate Connor Hughes added 11 kills for the defending NCAA champions.

Junior middle blocker Colin Mehring had five kills, one solo block and five block assists for UCI, which hit .273 as a team, 66 points worse than the Cougars.

All-American Taylor Sander had 16 kills and hit .375 to pace the winners, who received 12 kills from Russ Lavaja and Josue Rivera.

Hawaii 5, UC Irvine 2

HONOLULU — Reo Asami won at No. 2 singles and Jonathan Hammel and Shuhei Shibahara combined to win at No. 2 doubles to pace the visiting Anteaters in Big West Conference action Friday.

UCI is 0-2, 0-1 in conference.
