12 Newport-Mesa players earn All-CIF football honors

Corona del Mar High senior quarterback Cayman Carter earned the All-CIF Southern Section Southern Division Offensive Player of the Year award, highlighting one of a dozen Newport-Mesa football players making All-CIF in their respective divisions.

Carter led CdM to its second straight CIF Southern Section Southern Division title and a Pacific Coast League title.

Other CdM players making the Southern Division team include junior middle linebacker Alex Moore, senior defensive end Tim Reinhardt, senior kicker Griff Amies, senior wide receiver Troy Reese, junior center Giovanni Gentosi, senior cornerback Ryan Griffin and junior punter Luke Napolitano.

CdM Coach Scott Meyer was named the Southern Division Coach of the Year for the second straight year. He led the Sea Kings (12-2, 5-0 in league) to back-to-back Southern Division championships and their first undefeated league championship in the program’s history.

Also, earning Southern Division accolades are Estancia senior running back Robert Murtha and senior safety DeionTe Haywood.

Newport Harbor senior tailback Talalelei Teaupa and junior left tackle Ramsey Hufford made the Southwest Division team.

Carter, in his first year as a starter, passed for 2,210 yards and 17 touchdowns, with only six interceptions, and rushed for 1,073 yards and 15 touchdowns. He completed 167 of 290 passes, setting a CdM single-season completion record.

Carter also was the Daily Pilot Newport-Mesa Dream Team Player of the Year and the All-Pacific Coast League MVP.

Moore anchored CdM’s defense, which shut out its first three playoff opponents. He led the area with 143 tackles to go with one sack, two forced fumbles and one fumble recovery.

Moore, who shared the All-Pacific Coast League Defensive MVP award, intercepted a pass in the Sea Kings’ 35-10 win against Garden Grove in the Southern Division title game and returned it 30 yards for a touchdown.

Moore also received Dream Team and third-team All-Orange County accolades.

Reinhardt, a two-time All-CIF selection, finished with nine sacks, 47 tackles, one safety and one forced fumble. He earned second-team All-Orange County and first-team All-Pacific Coast League honors.

Amies converted 22 of 30 field-goal attempts, tying the state single-season record for field goals made. His longest successful field goal was a 52-yarder.

Amies, who converted 45 extra-point kicks and recorded 26 touchdowns, garnered first-team MaxPreps All-American, first-team All-Orange County and Dream Team honors and the All-Pacific Coast League Kicker of the Year award.

Reese, a Dream Team and first-team All-Pacific Coast League pick, led the area with 55 receptions for 803 yards. He caught nine touchdowns passes.

Gentosi helped the Sea Kings average an area-best 32.5 points per game. He made the Dream Team and first-team All-Pacific Coast League.

Griffin, a Dream Team and first-team All-Pacific Coast League pick, made 58 tackles and intercepted four passes.

Napolitano, a Dream Team and second-team All-Pacific Coast League pick, averaged 41.2 yards per punt and he placed 13 punts inside the opponent’s 20-yard line. He recorded two 60-yard punts.

Murtha, a three-time All-CIF selection, rushed for 1,594 yards and 15 touchdowns, leading Estancia (7-4, 4-1 in Orange Coast League) to the Southern Division playoffs for the fourth straight year.

He finished as the Newport-Mesa career leader for yards rushing (5,489) and touchdowns (58).

Murtha received the All-Orange Coast League Offensive Player of the Year award for the third straight season. He is also a three-time Dream Team selection.

Haywood, a Dream Team and first-team All-Orange Coast League member, finished with 75 tackles, one sack, one interception, three fumble recoveries and one forced fumble.

Teaupa, the Dream Team Offensive Player of the Year and All-Sunset League Offensive Player of the Year, led Newport Harbor to its best record (4-1) in Sunset League play in 35 years and the quarterfinals of the Southwest Division playoffs, the program’s first quarterfinal appearance in seven years.

Teaupa rushed for an area-best 1,662 yards, to go with 11 touchdowns. His single-season yards ranks eighth in Newport Harbor’s history.

Teaupa produced four 200-yard games on the ground, including a 272-yard effort in the Sailors’ 42-21 win against Troy in the first round of the playoffs. The mark is the eighth-best single-game rushing performance in the Sailors’ history.

Teaupa earned third-team All-Orange County accolades.

Hufford, who shared the All-Sunset League Defensive Lineman of the Year award, made the Southwest Division team as an offensive lineman.

Hufford, a Dream Team and third-team All-Orange County pick, helped the Sailors’ offense average 30.2 points per game during a five-game winning streak, which included the program’s first playoff win in five years. The winning streak is Newport Harbor’s longest in seven years.
