Golf: Freshman vies for spot
Estancia High’s boys’ golf team could benefit from a freshman transfer who is returning to Costa Mesa after living in Reno.
Eagles’ Coach Art Perry confirmed that Courtland Lee has been attending Estancia for more than two weeks.
“He’s a little guy, but he hits the ball straight and he has a good short game,” Perry said.
Lee is trying out for one of the six varsity spots. The Eagles open competition in the Ayala Tournament Feb. 28 at Los Serranos Country Club’s South Course in Chino Hills.
On Aug. 4, 2010, Lee and three players teamed to win the boys’ 13-14 division of the Northern Nevada Junior Golf Assn. Plumas Pines junior tournament. The quartet shot 13-under-par 59 in the scramble format and won by three strokes.
The following day, Lee won the boys’ 13-14 division of the Graeagle junior tournament with 28 points. Tournament officials used a Stableford scoring system that awarded 10 points for double-eagle, eight for eagle, five for birdie and two for par, said Dean Miller, assistant executive director of the association.

*Corona del Mar junior Mike Moorhead placed second among 56 finishers at a Future Collegians World Tour event Jan. 1-2 at PGA West in La Quinta.
Moorhead shot one-under (72-71 – 143) and led the boys’ 16-18 division in par-three scoring average (2.62). Brian Song of Beverly Hills won the tournament at six-under (71-67 – 138) playing on the TPC Stadium Course and Nicklaus Tournament Course. Moorhead and Song tied for the lead with eight birdies apiece among a field that included five Canadians and players from Washington, Oregon and Colorado.

Costa Mesa United organizes the tournament to raise money for the city’s youth sports.

*Pelican Hill Golf Club will host a series of winter golf camps beginning Jan. 22.
A putting school will be held from 9 a.m. to noon Jan. 22, Feb. 26 and March 12. The other camps are as follows:
Chipping/pitching/bunker school from 1 to 4 p.m. Jan. 22, Feb. 26 and March 12; full-swing school from 9 a.m. to noon Jan. 23, Feb. 27 and March 13; green reading from 2 to 4:30 p.m. Feb. 27.
