High School Roundup: Five Newport wrestlers advance at Tustin

Asics Southern California Challenge

TUSTIN — Newport Harbor seniors Mason Murphy (170 pounds) and Alberto Ramirez (132) both went 3-0 to advance to Saturday’s championship quarterfinals at Tustin High.

Murphy and Ramirez were among five Sailors who advanced to the second day and helped Newport Harbor sit in 16th out of 60 schools after the first day of the two-day event.

Murphy recorded two pins, while Ramirez had one pin.

Senior Virgilio Martinez (126) and junior Andrew Craft (138) both went 4-1 and will wrestle in consolation action. Junior James Pilz (160) went 3-1 and is in the consolation bracket.

Newport Harbor returns to wrestle at Tustin Saturday at 9:30 a.m.

GIRLS’ SOCCER

Sage Hill 2, Loara 1

NEWPORT COAST — Tiffany Taylor scored the game-winner with less than three minutes left for the Lightning in the nonleague game Friday.

Rachael Jaffe assisted Taylor. Meg Crade scored on an assist from Allie Mowrey with 10 minutes left to tie the game, 1-1, for Sage Hill (8-2-2).

Lightning goalie Kekai Whitford made three saves.

Newport Harbor 1, Edison 1

NEWPORT BEACH — Henry Ramirez scored the equalizer for the Sailors in the Sunset League game Friday.

Goalie Osiel Porcayo made five saves for Newport Harbor (8-5-3, 0-1-1 in league).

Lake Mead 60, Sage Hill 39

LAS VEGAS — Junior guard Jack Williamson scored 10 points for the Lightning in a consolation game at the Las Vegas Invitational Friday.

Sophomore forward Zach Drobenko added eight points for Sage Hill (6-8), which plays against Calvary Chapel of Las Vegas in a consolation game on Saturday.
