Doubles teams pace Laguna

The Laguna Beach girls’ tennis team picked up its third decisive victory in Orange Coast League play Tuesday by defeating visiting Calvary Chapel, 16-2.

The Breakers swept all three lines in doubles play, and Kelly Keller swept at No. 3 singles.

Sweeping in doubles were the team of No. 1 Ashley Shelton/Madeline Loomis (6-2, 6-0, 6-1), the teams of Summer Clawson/Iman Berri (6-4, 6-1) and Brigette Thomas/Josie Sandoval (6-2) at No. 2, and the No. 3 team of Natasha Keces/Malia Helms (6-1, 6-1, 6-0).

Keller won all three of her singles matches by scores of 6-1. At No. 1 singles, Kira Hamilton (6-2) and Kathleen Kimball (6-2), who subbed for Hamilton, picked up two points as did No. 2 singles Ashley Fair (3-6, 6-0, 6-2).

The win put Laguna at 3-0 in league and 7-2 overall.

“We are coming together as a team, and the depth of our nonstarters gives us a lot of versatility which helps us get through difficult matches when our starters are sick or injured,” Laguna Coach Don Davis said.

In a nonleague match played Monday , Laguna was edged, 10-8, by visiting San Clemente. Summer Dvorak swept (6-2, 6-0, 6-0) at No. 1 singles, and Keces/Helms swept at No. 3 doubles (6-0, 6-4, 7-6 (7-1 tiebreaker).

The Breakers had opened their league season Sept. 23 and shut out host Costa Mesa, 18-0. Two days later, they beat visiting Godinez, 17-1.

Laguna played a league match Thursday at Estancia. The score wasn’t available at press time.

The Breakers step away from league play to host Beckman at 3 p.m. Monday at Lower Peters Park. They have 3 p.m. league matches at Saddleback on Tuesday and home against Costa Mesa on Thursday .

Girls’ Volleyball

The Breakers took on Dana Hills Tuesday, and dropped the nonleague match to the host Dolphins, 25-20, 25-22, 25-20.

The loss put Laguna, ranked fourth in CIF Southern Section Division 2AA, at 5-10 overall.

The Breakers began defense of their Orange Coast League title Thursday at Costa Mesa. The scores weren’t available at press time.

Next week, Laguna hosts Saddleback Tuesday and visits Estancia Thursday. Both games start at 5;15 p.m.

Boys’ Water Polo

The Breakers took 11th place Saturday at the South Coast Tournament.

In pool play, which started Sept. 25, Laguna, No. 1 in CIF Southern Section Division 3 and the top-seed in its pool, opened with a 17-5 victory over Riverside Poly (No. 5, Division 5). The Breakers stumbled in their next game as Orange Lutheran (No. 5, Division 1) rallied in the second half to pull out an 11-9 win. The Breakers came back Friday to defeat Servite (No. 8, Division 1), 14-12.

Laguna played its final two tournament games Saturday. In the first game, they were edged, 11-10, by Dos Pueblos (No. 5, Division 2), but defeated San Clemente (No. 10, Division 2) in the 11th-place game, 13-10.

“This weekend was a bit of a roller coaster for us,” said Laguna Coach Ethan Damato, whose Breakers entered the week 8-4 overall. “Our loss against Orange Lutheran Thursday (Sept. 25) was a hard-fought game and a tough loss against a good team. We felt like we let a good opportunity split past us and let some tough breaks get the best of us.

“Friday, we played well against a good Servite team but turned around with a tough loss Saturday morning to Dos Pueblos. We finished the weekend with a win over San Clemente, but struggled all weekend to play consistently in any facet of the game.”

Laguna began its title defense in the Orange Coast League when it opened league play Wednesday at Costa Mesa. The score wasn’t available at press time.

The Breakers also got another shot at Orange Lutheran. Having already played 13 games this season, the Breakers played their first home game of the year when they hosted the Lancers Thursday. The score wasn’t available at press time.

The Breakers host Godinez in a 3:15 p.m. league game next Wednesday, and host Dana Hills in a nonleague game at 4 p.m. Thursday .

Girls’ Golf

The Breakers won their second Orange Coast League match by defeating host Calvary Chapel, 214-270, Monday at the Mile Square Park Classic Course (par 34) in Fountain Valley.

Laguna scores for the match: MaryKate Quellmalz, 42; Leslie Dwight, 47: BellaRose Robinson, 39; Halle Redfearn, 43; Hailey McCullough, 43; Hannah Burnett, 58.

The Breakers improved to 2-0 in league and shared first place with Estancia (2-0) after Monday’s result. That tie was broken Wednesday when the teams met at Mesa Linda Golf Course in Costa Mesa. The score wasn’t available at press time.

In its league opener Sept. 24, Laguna scored a 258-330 win over host Costa Mesa at Mesa Linda (par 35). Scores for the Breakers: BellaRose Robinson (46, medalist); Leslie Dwight (47); Halle Redfearn (50); Hailey McCullough (57); Anna Kunkel (58).

Robinson, a freshman, earned her first medalist finish. McCullough and Kunkel made key scoring contributions.

The Breakers won their opener without Quellmalz (illness), its No. 1 player, in the lineup.

Laguna hosts a league four-way match at 2:30 p.m. Monday at Ben Brown Golf Course. They Breakers play a league four-way match at 3 p.m. Wednesday at Mesa Linda Golf Course in Costa Mesa.

Cross-Country

The Breakers took part in the Orange Coast League Cluster Sept. 24 at Irvine Regional Park in the city of Orange. The girls’ and boys’ teams both finished in first place in the team standings. Laguna’s Natalie Kimball won the girls’ three-mile race in 19 minutes 6.59 seconds.
