Rivals capture crowns

The boys’ swimming teams from Corona del Mar High and Newport Harbor captured league titles Friday, the Sea Kings winning the Pacific Coast League crown and Newport Harbor earning the Sunset League championship.

CdM dominated the PCL meet, scoring 570 points, 123 more than second-place University at Beckman High.

CdM’s Blake Terry was named Swimmer of the Meet. He won the 100-yard freestyle in 46.80 and tied for first in the 50 free with Ari Marks, as both finshed in 21.53. Matthew Berry was third in 21.53.

Terry, Marks, Berry and Michael Liao won the 200 free relay setting a new PCL meet record in 1 minute, 25.27 seconds.

Liao won the 100 breaststroke in 56.70 to break the PCL meet record.

John Kim won the 200 indivdual medley in 1:53.86 and the 100 butterfly in 50.57. Hayden Leach, Garrett Larson, Jared Namba and Kim won the 400 free relay in 3:11.79, that broke the PCL meet record.

Namba, Liao, Kim and Berry won the 200 medley relay in 1:34.35 to break the PCL meet record.

Newport Harbor boys

NEWPORT BEACH — Newport Harbor won the Sunset League title in dominating fashion at its pool, scoring 546 points, while second-place Edison finished 121 points behind.

The 200-yard freestyle relay team of Jack Yeager, Blake Kelly, Matthew Russell and Ikaika Sarme won the event and set a meet record with a time of 1 minute, 24.56 seconds.

Tom Fischer placed second in the 200 free (1:42.06), while Kelly finished second (2:00.02) and Sean Richards finished third (2:03.25) in the 200-yard individual medley.

Russell rounded out the Sailors’ top finishers by finishing second in the 100-yard freestyle (46.42).

Newport girls

NEWPORT BEACH — The Sailors finished third at the Sunset League finals with 367 points.

Edison won the meet with 501.5 points.

Newport Harbor’s Casey Duckworth placed second in the 200-yard individual medley in 2 minutes, 5.83 seconds and the 500 freestyle in 4:57.01.

Kate Klippert finished third in the 100 free in 52.39 and Madison McLaren placed third in the 500 free (5:05.18).

The 200 free relay team of McLaren, Duckworth, Katie Jackson and Klippert finished third in 1:50.50.

CdM girls

IRVINE — Corona del Mar High’s Brynne Wong won a Pacific Coast League title in the 100-yard butterfly in 57.44 seconds at Beckman High.

CdM finsihed third. University won the meet.

DIVING

Newport Harbor High junior Clay Pinckney continued his domination in the Sunset League, winning the boys’ diving title Thursday at Los Alamitos.

Pinckney, who won the CIF Southern Section Division I individual title last year, will defend his championship Thursday at Fullerton College.

Corona del Mar’s Katherine Myers won the Pacific Coast League girls’ title, scoring 408.65 points.

Pinckney will also try to qualify for the CIF Southern Section Masters May 18 at Belmont Plaza. He won the Masters title last year.

He is believed to be the first to win a CIF diving title at Newport Harbor.

Pinckney was last season’s Sunset League Diver of the Year who set a new scoring record this season.

Estancia and Costa Mesa boys

LAGUNA BEACH — Jordan Lawson (100-yard backstroke) and Sunny Stone (100 breaststroke) claimed individual Orange Coast League titles to help Costa Mesa High finish second as a team Thursday at Laguna Beach High.

Lawson topped the field in one minute, 0.40 seconds, while Stone touched first in 1:08.65.

The Mustangs’ Joey Dinh and Chingz Bigalimov were each second in two individual events and both contributed to second-place relays.

Dinh went 1:54.09 in the 200 free and 57.58 in the 100 butterfly, both good for second.

Bigalimov was second in the 100 freestyle (50.46) and the 50 free (22.76).

Estancia High’s Asher Twardowski was third in the 200 individual medley (2:16.33) and fourth in the 500 free (5:32.42), while teammate Connor Graham was third in the 100 breaststroke (1:09.52) and fifth in the 50 free (23.66) to pace the Eagles.

Mesa’s James Lewis was third in the 500 free (5:26.09), while Mustangs Lawson (1:59.25 in the 200 free), Jordan Lux (1:01.70 in the 100 fly) and Eric Medina (1:10.53 in the 100 back) were fourth.

Lux was fifth in the 200 IM (2:21.00) and Cade Proulx was fifth in the 100 back (1:10.88) for Mesa.

Estancia’s Preston Schow was fourth in the 100 free (55.33) and fifth in the 50 free (24.32).

Proulx was sixth in the 100 free (53.58), while Mesa’s Marlo Afuang (1:14.53 in the 100 breaststroke) and Medina (5:49.38 in the 500 free) were also sixth.

Estancia’s Matt Thome was sixth in the 100 fly (1:02.72).

Costa Mesa’s 200 and 400 free relay teams were second, as was Estancia’s 200 medley relay.

The Costa mesa boys had 326.5 points, behind champion Laguna Beach (415.5).

Estancia was fourth.

Costa Mesa and Estancia girls

LAGUNA BEACH — Costa Mesa High senior Hannah Speer won the 100-yard breaststroke in one minute, 13.58 seconds to lead the Mustangs to a second-place team finish in the Orange Coast League finals Thursday at Laguna Beach High.

Nicole Tfaye (27.53 in the 50 freestyle) and Aubrey Hill (1:08.53 in the 100 butterfly) recorded second-place finishes for the Mustangs.

Third-place finishers from Costa Mesa were Tfaye (100 free in 1:00.77), Kindsey Aherne (100 backstroke in 1:14.79), Kellie Thorsness (100 breaststroke in 1:22.06) and Monica Folkerts (500 free in 6:10.55).

Finishing fourth were Speer (200 free in 2:09.56), Hill (200 individual medley in 2:38.78), Thorsness (50 free in 27.91), Mesa’s Claudia Le (100 back in 1:15.92), and Estancia’s Lauren Preston (100 breaststroke in 1:27.83).

Folkerts was fifth in the 200 free (2:22.63), while the Mustangs’ Cameron Pollard was fifth in the 200 IM (2:41.52) and the 100 fly (1:16.96).

Estancia’s Sara Ray (100 back in 1:22.20) and Kylie Carpenter (500 free in 6:45.85) earned sixth-place finishes.

The Costa Mesa 200 medley relay and both of the Mustangs’ free relays finished second.

The Mustangs finished with 288 points, 173 behind victorious Laguna Beach.

Estancia was fourth.
