Madonna 6, Vanguard 2 RIVERSIDE — The Lions’ season came to an end in the NAIA Tournament’s opening-round that consists of a five-team, double-elimination group tournament at Cal Baptist.

Jacob Domingos went two for two with both runs batted in for the Lions (34-20), who received two hits apiece from Eric Krzysiak and Tyson Leighton.

Bryce Reid allowed five hits and two runs in eight innings for Vanguard, after starter Jason Dovel gave up four runs in the first inning.

It was the second appearance in the NAIA Tournament for Vanguard, which earned an at-large bid out of the Golden State Athletic Conference. The Lions finished fourth at the 1985 NAIA World Series.

Coach Ralph Grajeda, in his second season, guided the Lions to their best single-season win total in at least 25 years. It’s 22 wins in GSAC play were a school record.

Michigan-based Madonna went on to lose to Cal Baptist later Thursday, allowing the Lancers to advance to the NAIA World Series.

MEN’S GOLF

NCAA Southwest Regional SANTEE — UC Irvine is tied for 18th after 18 holes of the 54-hole event Thursday at Carlton Oaks Golf Club.

Junior Max Greil paces the UCI individuals. He is tied for 18th after shooting two-over-par 74.

Freshman Jerry He (74) is tied for 25th, while reigning Big West Conference champion John Chin, a senior, is tied for 40th after a first-round 76.

UCI’s team score of 303 is nine shots back of leaders Oregon, Cal, Tennessee and UNLV.

MEN’S TENNIS

Azusa Pacific 5, Vanguard 4 MOBILE, Ala. — Senior Alessandro Ventre won in singles and doubles for the Lions in the quarterfinals of the NAIA Championship at the Mobile Tennis Center Thursday.

Ventre won at No. 1 singles, 6-1, 6-1, and teamed with Sandro Bucher to claim a 9-8 win at No. 2 doubles to help the Lions (15-8) win the doubles point.

WOMEN’S TENNIS

Concordia 5, Vanguard 4 MOBILE, Ala. — Junior Anna Valingsten won in singles and doubles for the Lions in the quarterfinals of the NAIA Championship at the Mobile Tennis Center Thursday.

She posted a 6-2, 7-6 triumph at No. 4 doubles and teamed with Betty Tesfa to win at No. 2 doubles for the Lions (14-8).
