SAILING

Team national championship MADISON, Wis. — Junior skipper Michael Menninger, a Newport Beach resident, helped St. Mary’s College of Maryland win the Intercollegiate Sailing Assn. team race championship, completed Monday on Lake Mendota.

Menninger, a skipper of three two-person boats that all contributed to their school’s fifth national title, helped St. Mary’s edge Boston College by virtue of a tiebreaker.

Boston College edged St. Mary’s on a tiebreaker at last year’s event.

Menninger helped St. Mary’s go 6-0 in group competition, before advancing to the elite eight, then the final four. Four finalists vie for the title in a head-to-head, round-robin format.

Menninger teamed with crew Kelly Wilbur.
