Editorial: Congratulations to the Sea Kings

The majority of high school football coaches want to teach their players to become men who will be productive in whatever career they choose. Winning? That’s usually a bonus.

Well, members of Corona del Mar High School’s football team have earned plenty of the bonus this season. They are working hard and having fun. Winning is fun.

Coach Scott Meyer’s Sea Kings are 14-0, and last week they won their third straight CIF Southern Section Southern Division championship. No other football team in the school’s history had won three straight CIF section titles.

What’s more, the CdM football team has won 24 games in a row. While most schools are into the transition of competing in winter sports, the Sea Kings are still playing football. No other Newport-Mesa football program has reached this stage, playing past 14 games.

They play in the CIF State Southern California Regional Division III Bowl Game Saturday night at Orange Coast College. If they beat Ojai Nordhoff, they advance to next week’s CIF State Division III Bowl Game.

Amid their momentous season, they have energized the community with a special brand of football — one that’s impressive on offense and defense. It is difficult to find much adversity that the squad has endured. But the players have suffered some injuries. They have also tried to conquer pestering penalties. That indeed challenged them during their big Southern Division championship win against Garden Grove last week.

It is hard to doubt this CdM team is great. These Sea Kings are different from most. That’s seen from their unique, cool uniforms to their collective passion for winning.

While there has been plenty of success over the past three seasons, the future appears just as bright for the CdM football program. This season, the freshmen and junior varsity teams completed undefeated campaigns. Each CdM team won the Pacific Coast League championship.

In Meyer’s three years in charge, CdM’s varsity team is 38-4. There are plans for a new football stadium to be built at the school.

All of the great news suggests that if a loss was to come Saturday night, the Sea Kings know it has been a great season. Thing is, they are not thinking about losing.

And for that, and for the extremely successful season, we say congratulations.
