Around Town: Hoag foundation raises $850,000 at Christmas ball Food to be distributed to needy

The Hoag Hospital Foundation’s 48th annual Christmas Carol Ball last weekend raised $850,000 to support Hoag’s research, education, clinical staff and patient support services.

More than 520 people turned out at the St. Regis Monarch Beach Resort & Spa in Dana Point for the Dec. 6 event, which featured live music, auctions, food and a performance by figure skaters on an ice rink inside the ballroom.

The National League of Young Men will help sort and distribute food from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Saturday at the Mobile Pantry at Christ Lutheran Church, 760 Victoria St., Costa Mesa.

The pantry is part of Second Harvest Food Bank of Orange County.

Nonprofits to compete in gift-wrapping

Representatives of 10 nonprofit organizations will go head to head Tuesday in a gift-wrapping competition sponsored by Quattro Caffe of Costa Mesa.

A panel of judges will determine the winner of the contest based on which charity can pull off the most elaborate and festively decorated package in 15 minutes. The winning organization will receive a $2,500 catering package prepared by chef Antonio Cagnolo.

The participating organizations are Make-A-Wish Orange County & the Inland Empire, Boys Hope Girls Hope of Fullerton, American Family Housing, Mission Hospital Foundation, Child Abuse Prevention Center, Free Wheelchair Mission, Child SHARE, Orange County Symphony, Grandma’s House of Hope and Foster Care Auxiliary of Orange County.

Quattro Caffe is at South Coast Plaza, 3333 Bristol St.

Fundraiser aims to reduce plastics use

The Rob Machado Foundation, founded by surfer, environmental activist and musician Rob Machado, will present a holiday fundraiser with music, food, drinks, a raffle and a live auction from 6 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the Arbor Real Estate offices at 425 W. 30th St., Newport Beach.

Proceeds from the event will go toward providing water filling stations, reusable water bottles and recycling programs in the Newport-Mesa Unified School District to help reduce single-use plastics, according to a news release.

Casino Night will benefit diabetes foundation

The Pediatric-Adolescent Diabetes Research and Education Foundation will present its first Casino Night on Thursday to benefit children with Type 1 diabetes.

The event will be from 7 to 10 p.m. at the Knott’s Berry Farm Hotel, 7675 Crescent Ave, Buena Park.

PADRE is a nonprofit agency based at Hoag Hospital’s Mary and Dick Allen Diabetes Center in Newport Beach and at Children’s Hospital of Orange County. It provides educational and support programs for children, teenagers and families affected by Type 1 diabetes.

Thursday’s event will include blackjack, roulette, craps, appetizers and desserts, complimentary wine and a cash bar. Guests will receive $50 in poker chips, with additional chips available for purchase. Winnings will be used toward tickets for chances to win prizes.

UCI Extension wins marketing awards

UC Irvine Extension, the university’s continuing education arm, won three awards in the University Professional and Continuing Education Association’s Marketing Awards program, earning one gold and two bronze awards in the interactive media category at a recent association seminar in Atlanta.
