Mailbag: Meet someone who likes the bunnies — for the joy they provide

Share

Councilman-elect Scott Peotter wants to get rid of Newport Beach’s concrete bunnies. He says he’s never met anyone who likes them. I would be happy to meet Peotter.

I spend a fair amount of time at the Central Library as a volunteer and a user of the services there. I love the bunnies. Not everything has to have a purpose. We need some things in life just for the enjoyment they provide.

Don’t deny public art as a tradition

Please tell Peotter that we love the bunnies. They are simply a continuation of a rich and long tradition of public art in the Western world. In this case, they represent the lighthearted fun that Newport Beach used to embody.

Peotter may not like the art. That’s his right. But, hopefully, we are not entering an era when the tastes of a city councilman-elect direct the aesthetic decisions of the community.

Decorate bunnies for the holidays

One beautiful aspect of the bunnies at the city park is that the children adore them. I have seen the children at Easter and Halloween enjoying them. It will be nice if they are decorated for the holidays.

GOP’s midterm victories in surfing terms

In 1963, President John F. Kennedy said, “A rising tide lifts all boats.” He was speaking metaphorically about the U.S. economy.

With this thought in mind, let me say to all the surfers wondering about the national midterm election results: “Simply put, the GOP got barreled and the Democrats pearled.”

This translates to the Republicans were lined up in the perfect position to ride their waves, while the Dems fell flat on their faces when their boards suddenly were dragged under water.
