Mailbag: Peotter is wrong to take aim at bunny statues

Share

Councilman-elect Scott Peotter’s initial plan upon taking office is to get rid of the concrete bunnies in the upper reaches of the Newport Beach Civic Center park.

We can understand why he thinks this completely irrational wish might be an easy task to accomplish. Those who adore the bunnies and love to play on them are too young to vote.

Climbing on the white bunnies is a highlight of our grandchildren’s visits to Newport Beach. What’s the point of getting rid of them?

Who does Peotter think he is representing with the ridiculous plan? I suppose this inexplicable goal of his early tenure in office is to be expected from someone who has sneered at the recent centralized City Hall, library, parking additions and city park as a “Taj Mahal.” All these facilities are well-used and valued by the community.

Furthermore, this first-class upgrade was done in such a way that Newport Beach maintains its AAA bond rating, which we hope the new City Council will be able to sustain.

Dismantling community property, bit by bit, would be regrettable and unsupported by residents.

Peotter might do more for his political future by focusing on something substantial.

Don’t take bunnies too seriously

I cannot believe that Councilman-elect Scott Peotter is upset about the library bunnies.

Will their removal be his first priority as councilman? Surely there must be more-important business in Newport Beach.

Perhaps he — and others who feel the same — should actually spend some time studying those bunnies. They are a great reminder to not take ourselves quite so seriously.

Save the angst for real problems, and solve those first. Don’t waste valuable time worrying about some whimsical, fun bunnies that many people truly enjoy.

Shedding light on hackers aids dog rescue

Re. “Overseas hackers shut down dog rescue’s website for bragging rights, expert says,” (Nov. 14):

We appreciate the article about our website problems. Even though the hacking incident is horrible, the article helped increase community awareness of the wonderful group German Shepherd Rescue of Orange County, and will no doubt result in more dogs being saved and adopted.

I am currently the proud parent of three rescued German shepherds: Noodle, Lexi and Whiskey.
