From the Boathouse: Honoring heroes by the harbor

Share

Ahoy! “The war to end all wars” ended Nov. 11, 1918, when Germany signed the armistice agreement and surrendered to the Allies on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month. The war didn’t offically end until June 28, 1919, when the Treaty of Versailles was signed in France.

Veterans Day was proclaimed by Woodrow Wilson, the 28th president, in November 1919 to commemorate Armistice Day. Later, this day became a national holiday to honor veterans of World War I, but in June of 1954, the Act of 1938 was amended to change the name to Veterans Day to honor all war veterans.

Therefore, American Legion Posts and other military organizations across the nation will celebrate Veterans Day on Monday. Our local American Legion Newport Harbor Post 291, located at 15th Street on the Balboa Peninsula in Newport Beach, will have the Call to Order at 10:55 hours with lunch following in the main hall. National observance will be held at Arlington National Cemetery with a wreath laying-ceremony at the Tomb of the Unknowns, followed by a ceremony in the Memorial Amphitheater. This is the day to thank all who have served in the U.S. Armed Forces.

Tip of the week is congratulations to CRN Digital Talk Radio, which syndicates my “Boathouse Radio Show.” The company and its founder, Mike Horn, are celebrating 30 years of broadcasting and being the first to foresee a new medium for radio.

Horn was the pioneer who had the inconceivable notion of placing radio station audio onto cable TV, and reaching an audience directly through TV into people’s homes.

“At first, people were not quite sure exactly what I did, but this is basically the radio dream of putting good programming together,” Horn said. “I am simply distributing it in a different way and getting different types of advertisers. Everything we have looked at has come completely around. We are much like a full-service agency. If someone wants to advertise on CRN, I have no qualms about walking over to a Clear Channel station and assembling a package that is going to work.

“The thing that bothers me most is if someone questions my integrity. I must find out what causes that and clear the air. If you can do a good job for as many people as possible, you will be successful. I am passionate about what I like and I like what I am doing. If you get the chance to do what you love, it is not work.”

Horn still remains a broadcaster himself with two live shows every weekday. In today’s technologically advanced world, many radio hosts broadcast from their home office or a remote location as I regularly do, thus saving the long commute to the radio station. As such, Horn has a remote broadcast studio in his home and sends the live feed to the CRN engineers at the station for distribution. So, he might be still his pajamas and bunny slippers as he broadcasts his daily one-hour morning show, “What’s Cookin’ Today,” about food, wine and travel.

“We have winemakers, great chefs and celebrities on the fast-paced show,” he explained. “There are usually two interviews, as well as open segments, to discuss what is happening in the world.”

Then in the afternoons is another one-hour show call, “The PM Show,” which he now hosts only on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. Co-hosts are now filling in for Horn on Tuesdays and Thursdays to help relieve a little stress of two live shows a day.

Again, congratulations, CRN, and thanks for helping to promote recreational boating by broadcasting my boating radio show.
