Pet expo this weekend in Costa Mesa

Fall Pet Days, a two-day event that focuses on responsible pet ownership, animal-welfare education and adoptions, returns to the Orange County Market Place in Costa Mesa for the fifth year on Saturday and Sunday.

The event, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. both days, will include displays and presentations by rescue and adoption groups, as well as speakers on subjects such as spaying and neutering, microchipping, pet training, rattlesnake aversion and more.

There will be photo opportunities with wolf dogs, lizards, snakes and other creatures for a $5 donation to rescue groups.

Admission, which includes the Market Place swap meet, is $2. It’s free for children 12 and younger and guests who donate pet food for local animal shelters and rescue groups. Personal pets are not allowed at the event.

Newport gala raises $930,000 for Big Brothers Big Sisters

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Orange County presented its 50th annual gourmet dinner black-tie gala on Oct. 23 at the Balboa Bay Resort in Newport Beach with more than 450 Southern California business and community leaders, who helped raise more than $930,000 to benefit the organization’s mentoring programs for at-risk youths.

Auction.com Chairman Rob Friedman of Newport Beach, a board member for Big Brothers Big Sisters of Orange County for 25 years, received the Joel K. Rubenstein Award, presented to those who have made a lasting impact on the organization.

Friedman provided the first challenge gift for the nonprofit’s capital expansion campaign and through Auction.com is donating $750,000 for a new building, according to a news release. He also has been the principal funder of the mentor recruitment campaign, the release said.

Walk raises $10,000 for diabetes research

A Balboa Island walk on Sunday attracted more than 80 participants and raised more than $10,000 for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, according to organizer Joanne Milo of Corona del Mar. It was the 19th annual JDRF Walk presented by Milo’s Shooting Stars group.

Donations are still being accepted. Checks made out to JDRF may be mailed to 717 Santana Drive, Corona del Mar, CA 92625. Online contributions can be made at www2.jdrf.org/goto/shootingstars.
