Commentary: Bunyan would bring needed change to the council

Share

We endorse Chris Bunyan for the Costa Mesa City Council. Residents have been calling for change. To quote Bunyan, “So why do they keep digging up candidates from the Costa Mesa graveyard and expecting change?”

The chemistry of the City Council has created contention among our city leaders, and residents are infuriated. Should our mayor win re-election and school Trustee Katrina Foley win a seat, we will have the same immovable tension and dissension that drove Foley out four years ago.

You can’t keep doing the same things over and over and expect change. One of these seats needs to be held by someone else.

It is time to let the past go and engage in a future in Costa Mesa that will include citizen input, end attacks on employees, protect our parks, stop high-density development and improve the quality of life. Let’s vote to give our great city a new beginning.

Bunyan has been active in Costa Mesa politics since 2006. After a brief hiatus in Newport Beach, he has returned motivated and energetic and with smart solutions to the issues plaguing our city.

He shows an ability and willingness to stand up to opposition. Bunyan opposes a city charter. He wants to ensure that Banning Ranch and Fairview Park remain natural and undeveloped. He wants to improve our neighborhoods, stop high-density development, aid people living on the streets and control the growth of group homes.

Bunyan, a skilled entrepreneur, brings the perspective of our newest generation of Costa Mesa residents — business people and families that are in the beginning and middle of their lives and seeking a quality lifestyle in a multifaceted city. This is the kind of new voice we need in our city.

He is a great listener and problem-solver, the perfect candidate to bring unity to the council and create a voice for all residents at the City Council.

HAROLD and JOYCE WEITZBERG are longterm Costa Mesa residents. Harold is a member of the city’s charter committee and a former council candidate.
