Community & Clubs: Attend movie night; celebrate Soroptimists
The Exchange Club of Newport Harbor will hold its 23rd annual movie screening on Oct. 10 at the Lido Theatre, according to past president Bob Wood.
The featured movie is “Captain Phillips,” which will be shown at 7 p.m. “Captain Phillips” is a multilayered examination of the 2009 hijacking of the U.S. container ship Maersk Alabama by Somali pirates. The story is simultaneously a pulse-pounding thriller and a complex portrait of the myriad effects of globalization.
The film focuses on the relationship between the Alabama’s commanding officer, Capt. Richard Phillips (award-winner Tom Hanks), and his Somali counterpart, Muse (Barkhad Abdi).
Included in the ticket price is the Food Festival, featuring tastes from a dozen restaurants, which begins at 5:30 p.m. Tickets are $60 for general admission and $90 for VIP seating. Proceeds go to the Orange County Child Abuse Prevention Center and other community charities.

Soroptimist International Newport Harbor Area
Soroptimist International of Newport Harbor Area was chartered in 1955 and has continuously served local and global issues that affect women and girls, according to past president and longtime member Dawn Marie Lemond.
This year, President Dalia Badajos Lugo has taken the theme “Legacy for a Better World” as an invitation to be part of the new direction the group is moving toward, that of preparing teenage girls to be service leaders and, in doing so, attracting their mothers to join the service leadership team.
Members have been excited to work with the teens on service activities that they choose and help them learn how to research, develop and implement projects.
Soroptimist is a global women’s organization whose members volunteer to improve the lives of women and girls through programs leading to social and economic empowerment. More than 80,000 Soroptimists in about 120 countries and territories support community-based and global projects. The organization is particularly concerned with providing women and girls access to education, seeing this as the most effective path to self-determination.
Soroptimists have been involved in our annual Women’s Opportunity and Violet Richardson awards, Race for the Cure and Healthy Girl Fair in Laguna Beach, in addition to supporting local shelters such as Orange Coast Interfaith Shelter and participating in awareness activities related to human trafficking and violence against women. One international project supports maternal health and training in Papua New Guinea.
SINHA’s life blood is its members — a diverse group of women who are passionate about contributing to opportunities and solutions that empower women and girls.

Last weekend of the Festival of Children
This coming weekend marks the end of the 12th annual Festival of Children at South Coast Plaza in celebration of National Child Awareness Month. This communitywide event, held every weekend in September, offers more than 100 free family activities while showcasing 75 youth-serving organizations in the community.
