Mailbag: Measure Y is not meant to the benefit residents

Share

The ballot argument in favor of Measure Y claims, “For decades we’ve worked to preserve the quality and uniqueness of Newport Beach neighborhoods. Reducing traffic, limiting future growth, improving water quality, increasing property values, which requires continuous refinement of the city’s priorities.”

Many longtime residents might quarrel with that. As a matter of fact, for the last half century, it has primarily been the residents who have devoted themselves to achieving many of the above-mentioned accomplishments. Accomplishments that have been achieved by thousands of volunteer hours given by neighbors through such organizations as Friends of Newport Bay, Stop Polluting Our Newport (SPON), Friends of Newport Coast, Newport Residents United and The Freeway Fighters.

Who were our adversaries in many of these fights? They were, primarily, the Newport Beach Chamber of Commerce and the Irvine Co.

Once again we are being asked to close our eyes and blindly rubber-stamp a ballot measure that is not in our best interest. Who will benefit from added development in Newport Center and near John Wayne Airport? Will it be the residents or the developers?

Ask yourself that question as you learn more about this unnecessary ballot measure.

Go to https://www.NewportVotesNo.org for more information. Then vote no on Measure Y.

Ballot measure is just a trick

Isn’t Newport Beach congested enough? As it is, I can’t get from one end to the other without getting stuck in traffic.

And the City Council wants to add more to this mess? It amazes me that even when the residents tell the City Council exactly what they want (no traffic), we get more and more development. Measure Y is just a trick to get us to approve even more buildings in Newport Center. Enough is enough.

Fitness column is a workout

I open my Daily Pilot every Friday eager to see where Carrie Luger Slayback’s writings, under the title Fitness Files, will take me.

I have been to the fields and produce and restaurant prepping areas, learning how vegetables reach our tables. I have even learned how my brain experiences seeing fine art. Fitness for my mind, body and spirit. Good reading.
