Community & Clubs: New officers greet the day at Sunrise Rotary
The Newport Beach Sunrise Rotary Club recently installed new officers for 2013-14.
Serving as president is Jeff Heileson, replacing termed-out Philip Reynolds. Serving with Heileson are Tammy McKennon, secretary; Rudy Baron, treasurer; Kimberly McKinney, president-elect and international service; and Steve Bender, John Hedlund and McKennon, directors.
Committee assignments are as follows: Caroline Babott continues as club bulletin editor; Will Longyear, club administration; Lisa Goodlad, fellowship; Jerry Barrone and Hedlund, finemaster; Bill Robbins, programs; Herb Norman, seargant-at-arms; Patricia Bintliff, community service; Max Alavia, youth service; Tim Brown, vocational service; Jackie Birdsong, environmental service; Brian Green, membership; Gil Thweatt, membership retention; Bob White, Rotary International Foundation; Laura Dietz, military service; and Lisa Hayes, club photographer.
The Newport Beach Sunrise Rotary Club meets for breakfast at 7:30 a.m. Tuesdays at Five Crowns Restaurant, 3801 E. Coast Hwy., Corona del Mar. Steve Harrington, 11-99 Foundation executive director, and Commander Elizabeth Barkley, of the California Highway Patrol, will speak at the next meeting. Kiwanis — We Serve
“Our clubs consist of 40 men and women,” said Charles Markel, past president of the Kiwanis Club of Costa Mesa. Twenty are working professionals, and 20 are retired.
Kiwanis is an Indian word for “we serve,” and the club has made young children Priority 1. The club meets for lunch at noon Thursdays on the second floor of the Costa Mesa Country Club. After lunch, a speaker discusses a topical issue.
The club averages one service project a month. It has worked through Kelly’s Closet to supply needy youngsters with a full change of new school clothes and supplies. This is done at South Coast Plaza’s Sears store. After the shopping, everyone jumps on the bus and returns to the Boys Club for lunch and games.
Another service project is picture day at Costa Mesa High School in cooperation with American Youth Soccer Organization. AYSO sells the tickets, while Kiwanis provides a delicious pancake breakfast for more than 2,500 people.
The Kiwanis club supports local high school athletes by recognizing a male and female athlete from Mesa and Estancia High School each month. Kiwanis also supports the two high schools with a program called Eagle and Mesa Prides. And we are involved with the annual Community Run at Fairview Park.
Kiwanis teams up with the Lion’s Club to help with the annual fish fry. It sponsors two Key Clubs, one at Costa Mesa High and one at Estancia High, and the award winning Circle K Club at Orange Coast College.
This year the Kiwanis club started OCYP (Orange County Young Professionals) for young professionals who have limited time for service projects and limited resources for full participation in Kiwanis.
The local club helps the international organization by assisting with the Eliminate Project, which aims to raise $110 million to eliminate neonatal tetanus throughout the world. On a district level, the young professionals support the annual Special Olympics track meet at Orange Coast College.

6 p.m.: The 57-member Rotary Club of Newport-Balboa meets at the Bahia Corinthian Yacht Club for a program by Robert Kost. Kost will share how his family volunteered to take newborn lions, tigers and bears into the home to help raise them alongside children and family pets.
