Mailbag: Rohrabacher’s global warming comments spark debate

Re. “Rohrabacher dismisses global warming, warns of China (Aug. 9): U.S. Rep. Dana Rohrabacher (R-Costa Mesa) has been around way too long. It troubles me that he keeps getting re-elected to my congressional district. He is a Republican representative who distinguishes himself more by demagoguery than accomplishment.

But you be the judge.

This is a four-minute snippet of one of the incendiary speeches Rohrabacher has blessed us with during some 26 years as our representative for the 48th Congressional District.

This speech was presented to a select audience of Newport-Mesa Tea Party members.

His penchant for hot-button issues and abrasive statements — global warming is a “total fraud;” the National Security Agency violates your privacy; big government is out to get you; be afraid of radical Islam; and Obamacare takes away your rights — appeals to conservatives and hides his lack of legislative accomplishments, not to mention oratorical skills.

We need someone to represent the interests of all residents of the district, not just Tea Partiers.

One hundred and thirty cheering Tea Party advocates packed the Halecrest Park Swim and Tennis Club to hear Rohrabacher in the above video clip.

How many of his estimated 712,000 constituents does Rohrabacher really represent?

Haven’t we had enough yet of the “surfing” congressman, Dana Rohrabacher (R-Costa Mesa)? Has the “liberal conspiracy” polluting the river jetties got to him? What will it take for the voters to stop electing him?

Rep. Dana Rohrabacher, a longtime member of the House Committee on Science, Space and Technology, recently brushed aside concern that the wildfires currently scorching his state and causing millions of dollars of damage have anything to do with climate change.

In fact, he told constituents at a town hall [in Newport Beach] that “global warming is a total fraud,” employed by liberals to “create global government.”

When I read the initial quote, I assumed it would be a committee member from an uneducated, rural area of Mississippi. I apologize to the state of Mississippi. It is a representative from my home state.

I am embarrassed that he is from my state. He sure puts Huntington Beach on the map, but this is not a distinction I care to be associated with.
