Scheafer has long been active in Costa Mesa sports and the Costa Mesa Newport Harbor Lions Club, having served as president a number of times and district governor in 1997-98. 120,000 trees and counting

The Rotary Club of Newport-Balboa will continue a long tradition by providing trees to all third-grade students in public and private schools in Costa Mesa and Newport Beach the week of March 3. The project is in recognition of Arbor Day and everyone’s responsibility for the environment, according to club President Bob Merring.

On Sunday, Rotarians and family members and friends will gather at 1 p.m. at Newport Beach Fire Station 7, 20401 SW. Acacia St. in Newport Beach, to clean the 2,632 plastic pots that hold the saplings. The deliver of the saplings starts Monday, according to Arbor Day Chairman Jerry Klemer.

As the Rotarians deliver the trees to the students, they will share the history of Arbor Day and our collective responsibility for the environment.
