Public Service Announcement: Want to apply for the school board? Here’s how

Because of the retirement of board member David Brooks, the Newport-Mesa Unified School District’s governing board has a vacancy.

The vacancy will be filled by provisional appointment after an application and public interview process. The successful candidate’s term will be March 11 to Dec. 8.

The Trustee Area 1 seat would be up for election in November and in 2016.

Any eligible resident within the district’s Trustee Area 1 may apply. Eligibility requirements pursuant to Government Code 35107 are:

• A) Any person, regardless of sex, who is 18 or older, a registered voter in Costa Mesa, a United States citizen, a resident of the school district in Trustee Area 1, and who is not disqualified by the Constitution or laws of the state from holding a civil office, is eligible to be elected or appointed a member of a governing board of a school district without further qualifications.

• (B) An employee of a school district may not be sworn into office as an elected or appointed member of that school district’s governing board unless, and until, he or she resigns as an employee. If the employee does not resign, the employment will automatically terminate upon being sworn into office.

• Interview timeline: Eligible candidates will be invited to a public interview process with the Board of Education. Interviews will occur on March 4 (times are yet to be determined).

The website also lists information about the role of board members, Trustee Area 1 boundary, bylaws of the board, contacts and additional resource information.

The application can be completed online, but it must be printed out, signed and the original mailed or hand delivered to the superintendent’s office and received by noon Feb. 28. The superintendent’s office is located at 2985-A Bear St.
