Community & Clubs: Community service riddle

Share

What do you get when you open your doors to the Red Cross for a blood drive, the fire department for CPR training and a delicious grilled lunch, a Semper Fi military honor ceremony, the Orange County Woodworkers Assn. for a woodworking service project, and no less than 20 other hands-on service projects performed by hundreds of walk-in volunteers?

You get an event called Hearts & Hands.

Presented by the Newport-Mesa-Irvine Interfaith Council and hosted by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, the 12th annual Hearts & Hands Community Service Day welcomes everyone to join with individuals, families and groups from many faiths, organizations, schools and neighborhoods from all over Southern California.

“This event has become a wonderful tradition, bringing our community together under the common goal of serving those in need,” said event coordinator Jaimie Day. “Suffering occurs all over the world and in so many ways. This day of service allows us to relieve the needs of many by the goods we produce and the skills we contribute — not to mention the fulfillment we experience while working together in cause and friendship.”

This event will be from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Nov. 17 at 801 Dover Drive, Newport Beach. Come for an hour or spend the day. You’ll know you have made a world of difference. For more information, email Day at Jaimieday@yahoo.com or visit https://www.nmiinterfaith.org.

LIONS COLLECTING FUNDS FOR HURRICANE VICTIMS

The Harbor Mesa Lions and all Lions clubs are collecting funds to help the victims of Hurricane Sandy on the East Coast.

This horrible disaster has caused many losses to those who live in the areas hit by Sandy, and once again, Lions are one of the first to respond with funds to help. Lions International has already donated $200,000 and has asked that all clubs help by collecting locally.

Unlike other organizations that help in these types of disasters, Lions International donates 100% of each dollar you donate to the victims. None of the money is used for administration of the organization. You can donate at Lionsclubs.org, or you can give it to any Lions club in the community.

Harbor Mesa Lions will forward any funds collected for this cause directly to the headquarters of Lions International. To send to their club, make the check out to Lions Clubs International Foundation and designate that it is for Hurricane Sandy victims. You can give the check to any Lions member or mail it to: Harbor Mesa Lions, P.O. box 1841, Costa Mesa, CA 92626.
