The Newport Beach 51st annual Sandcastle Contest
will at Big Corona from 11 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Oct. 7.
Join this fun day on one of Corona del Mar’s most beautiful beaches as a castle creator or a cheering fan! No experience necessary.
This is a great way for families, businesses, school groups, youth groups, churches and friends to have a fun time while supporting the community. There is a special category for architects as well as children younger than 12.

Newport Sunrise Rotary installs new officers
The Rotary Club of Newport Beach Sunrise “demoted” its president, Cynthia Cowell, who is also director of library services at the Newport Beach Public Library, at a dinner that featured Western attire to honor the native Texan.
Attorney Phil Reynolds takes over the presidential duties for 2012-13. A graduate of Caltech and Harvard Law School, Phil has distinguished himself with taking over the club’s Back Bay/Monte Vista High School scholarship program.
Rotarian Donna Cody, who has a doctorate in audiology, was given a special award for her tremendous work on behalf of the Rotary. In honor of one of the club’s founding members, Charles “Chuck” Hirsch, the board made him a lifetime member. Chuck is possibly most well known for his incredible support of the Boy Scouts and Rotary, as well as being a Stanford University graduate and the head of club humor.
Founding member Rudy Baron, a CPA, has taken over the critical job of club treasurer. President-elect is Dan Morris, an Ohio radio announcer and transplant.
The board approved some $65,000 in funding for various charities, including the aforementioned scholarship program, African Child Foundation, Wounded Warrior Battalion-West at Camp Pendleton, Newport-Mesa Schools Foundation, the Sea Scout base, Orange County Drug Court, Working Wardrobes, Salvation Army rehabilitation programs for men and women, and several others. Due to the tremendous work of Carl Lachman and the Annual Fundraising Gala Committee, this Rotary broke a club record for giving at our spring event.
The club also welcomed Luther Marr as its newest member.
