Community & Clubs: Rotary calling for donations to Marines
Newport Beach Sunrise Rotarian Laura Dietz is looking for crayons, chalk, pencils and paper to ship with care packages to Marines from the 1st Marines, 1st Battalion — the city of Newport Beach’s adopted battalion — to hand out to children in villages in Afghanistan.
It’s been shown that this activity befriends the civilians and has lead to “tips” on IEDs’ locations, saving Marines’ limbs and lives.

The last drive, paid for by individual donations, raised more than 45% more than the one before it.

In all, 920 pounds and $1,550 in postage were collected for 134 cartons, with the Newport Beach Sunrise Rotary Club getting the credit, Dietz said.

New officers for the Exchange Club
The Exchange Club of Newport Harbor has installed Leo Fracalosy as president for 2012-13. Serving with Fracalosy are Bill Bechtel, president elect; Jim Fournier, vice president for programs; John Kuse, secretary; Jerry Nininger, treasurer; and Bob Wood, immediate past president.
Joining the Board of Directors are Rick Anderson, Americanism; Ron Barnett, fundraising; Joe Brown, community service; Roy Shlemon, youth programs; Mitch Mitchell public relations; and Wally Ziglar, membership.
The Exchange Club meets at noon Thursdays at the Bahia Corinthian Yacht Club, 1601 Bayside Drive, Corona del Mar. This week, the club hears from Patrick Moore on the Fun Zone’s Ferris wheel.

Walter Garcia has been installed as president of the Costa Mesa Orange Coast Breakfast Lions Club, replacing Walden Hughes, whose term expired. The Lions Club meets at 7 a.m. Thursdays at Mimi’s Café, Harbor and Newport boulevards in Costa Mesa.

Lions welcome new member
Harbor Mesa Lions President Eileen Jensen sponsored a new member at a recent meeting.
Lynetta Rose was inducted into the club during the visitation of the District Gov. P.J. Smith, who officiated the induction ceremonies.
Lion governors visit each club in their district during their term of office. This visit will be a memorable one for him as not only did he induct the new member, but the club also surprised him with a comical skit to introduce him.
