The Crowd: Group gets wave of financial support
Founded in 1997, the Newport Harbor Sailing Foundation was established to support amateur sailing competition and help develop the skills of athletes participating in the sport.
The Newport Harbor Yacht Club welcomed the foundation this month for the 2012 Summer White Party with the goal of raising funds to assist both local high school and college sailors with expenses related to travel for national and international competition. Chaired by Steve and Lisa Briggs, the recent Friday night function sold out, raising more than $40,000 from the crowd of sailing devotees dressed head to toe in white.
Warren Person, foundation president and director, joined fellow VIPs, including Tom Linden, Paul Stemler, Rick Emsiek, Doug Welsh, Robert Kinney, Michael Daley, Richard Robinson and Adam Deermount in welcoming the arriving crush for a sunset dinner followed by a live auction.
Event committee members working to bring in the funds included Marcy Garner, Cari Peets, Leslie Shannon, Kirsten Potter and Molly Calder. The proceeds will be donated to sailing programs at Newport Harbor and Corona del Mar high schools, Mater Dei, Sage Hill School, UC Irvine and Chapman University. Funding will also be earmarked to assist local sailors competing in prestigious competitions such as the America’s Cup and the Olympics.

Promise to keep families together
Family Promise of Orange County is putting the final plans in place for its Saturday gala dinner at Orange County’s historic Wilcox Manor. The organization works with houses of worship providing emergency housing, food, and assistance for homeless families in Orange County. The group’s mission is to keep parents and children together in such times of financial and emotional hardship. Family Promise works in 41 American states, with some 125,000 volunteers making a difference for less fortunate folks trying to hold their lives together, one day at a time.
