Community & Clubs: Annual Fish Fry coming to Fairview Park this year
The Costa Mesa Newport Harbor Lions Club will hold its 65th annual Fish Fry in a new location: Fairview Park.
Admission to the two-day event to the park, 2525 Placentia Ave., on June 2 and 3 is free, while the delicious fish dinners will be served starting at noon for a cost of $10.
There will be carnival rides for all ages. Vendors will be selling corn on the cob, hot dogs and burgers, delicious pies and games of chance. And there is a baby contest and entertainment on the stage.

DAR announces scholarship winner
Yuri Arriaza, a senior graduating from Estancia High School, will be awarded the chapter scholarship at a Wednesday luncheon and award ceremony, which will begin at 11:30 a.m. at Scott’s Restaurant & Bar, 3300 Bristol St., Costa Mesa.
In attendance will be Yuri’s family, as well as Charles Hinman, Newport-Mesa Unified School District’s assistant superintendent of secondary education, and members of the local Daughters of the American Revolution chapter.
Yuri also received the DAR Good Citizen Award at the chapter’s 61st Annual American History Awards in March.
Known as the largest women’s patriotic organization in the world, DAR has more than 165,000 members with approximately 3,000 chapters in all 50 states and 11 foreign countries. The DAR has long promoted patriotism through commemorative celebrations, memorials, scholarships and activities for children, and programs for new immigrants.

Lions earn top honors
Harbor Mesa Lions members earned top honors and awards at the recent convention held in Ventura.
District Gov. Ken Sherwood named Joan Parks as District “Lion of the Year.” Joan was the president of the Sight & Hearing Foundation, co-chairwoman of the Teen Recognition Program and district trustee of the Student Speakers Foundation. She was also involved with many projects and programs for her club.
Sue Seager was given a prestigious award for her commitment to the Lions Student Exchange Program. Sandi Scheafer was given an appreciation award for being on the convention committee, and Carol Van Holt was also given this award for her media relations position. The district has more than 1,200 members from Orange and San Bernardino counties.

Thousands attend Field of Honor
More than 3,500 people, including 600 grade school students, attended this past weekend’s Field of Honor sponsored by the Exchange Club of Newport Harbor and held at Castaways Park in Newport Beach.
According to Jerry Nininger, event chair, Saturday’s program included a Marine color guard, pipe and drum from Orange County Fire, and a keynote speech by a Tuskegee Airman. The American Legion and Sons of the Legion dedicated 30 flags at the event.
“There were a lot of teary eyes on the hill as people walked among the flags,” said Nininger.

Hall of Fame luncheon coming
The public is invited to attend the Daily Pilot Community and Clubs Hall of Fame luncheon at noon on June 8 at the American Legion Post 291, 215 E. 15th St., Newport Beach.
Orange County Supervisor John Moorlach will serve as the master of ceremonies while the induction of honorees will be done by myself, Daily Pilot Editor John Canalis and City Editor Jamie Rowe. Proceeds will benefit Exploring, a program of the Orange County Council of Boy Scouts of America.
