Community & Clubs: Our hero, the newswoman

Share

On a quarterly basis, the Newport-Irvine Rotary Club hosts Chief David Maggard and the Irvine Police Department at breakfast to jointly honor a member of our community who has worked to contribute to the safety and benefit of Irvine and the local community, according to Rotarian Lucy E. Walther.

This month, Michele Gile of CBS2 and KCAL9, was the award recipient. She was instrumental in apprehending an individual who was acting erratically while driving his car with an infant in the back seat.

To Michele’s credit, and thanks to her help, the department was able to track down the offender (who was incapacitated from prescription drugs) and detain him while securing the safety of the infant. Michele helped do this all while she was on deadline and supposed to be getting ready to go on the air.

Maggard and the club presented Michele with a plaque and a check for $250 in appreciation of her efforts. A film crew was on hand for the presentation, and the event was publicized on KCAL9 News at 4 and 6 p.m. May 2.

“This is a great partnership that we have forged with the Irvine Police Department,” stated Walther.
