Community & Clubs: Indulge in the Perfect Ten

The Rotary Club of Newport-Balboa and the Newport Beach Sister City Assn. invite you to experience the flair of Japan from 6 to 9 p.m. April 24 at Ten Asian Bistro as they raise funds to support the joint Youth In Education Through Internationalization program. The evening’s 10 experiences include sushi, sake, kimono, pearls, tea, sumo, taiko drums, ikebana flowers, shiatsu and calligraphy. The $40 admission fee includes Japanese cuisine and experiences and knowing that you will be helping to continue the Okazaki-Newport Beach student exchange program. Circle K Club garners awards

At the recent, annual Circle K International’s California-Nevada-Hawaii District convention, the Orange Coast College Circle K Club was recognized for excellence with nearly four dozen awards. Sponsored by the Kiwanis Club of Costa Mesa, the OCC club has grown to be the largest community college Circle K Club in the world with nearly 100 members.

President Ryan Pham (Santa Ana), Vice President Tiffany Yim (Irvine), Kiwanis Family Chair Jennifer Que (Garden Grove), Membership Development and Education Chair Jacqueline Vu (Westminster), Technology Chair Kevin Amatayakul (Huntington Beach), Historians Naho Kon and Noriko Yoshida (both of Costa Mesa), Spirit Chair Thi Hoang (Fountain Valley) and Special Events Chair Jennifer Tran (Westminster) all were recognized as Distinguished Officers by the Kiwanis Committee that reviewed dozens of applications. Secretary Ysabel Montemayor (Irvine) earned the Monthly Report Form Award for her excellent work in tracking activities throughout the year.

The club was designated as Distinguished, the only community college club in the three-state district to earn this award. Thirty-three members received Member Recognition Awards for their contributions to the college and the community. This program offers awards at four levels based on service and leadership.

Faculty advisor Jeff Dimsdale, OCC’s dean of students emeritus, was named the Faculty Member of the Year.

In addition to recognizing the past year’s excellence, the convention signifies the end of the Circle K year and the time when new officers are elected and installed.

Elected at the district convention was Magic Kingdom Lt. Governor Ryan Pham, whose role is to coordinate the activities of eight Circle K clubs in Orange County. His term began April 1. OCC Circle K’s new officers are Thi Hoang, president; Chad Phuc Vo (Westminster), vice president-administration; Michael Pham, vice president-service; Kelley Ha (Westminster), secretary; and Christina Q. Nguyen (Garden Grove), treasurer.

Delegates selected to Girls State

The American Legion Newport Harbor Auxiliary has selected delegates and alternates from eight local high schools to attend the 2013 Girls State conference this summer at Claremont McKenna College. They are as follows: Suhaa Dada, Corona del Mar High School; Audrey Nguyen, Costa Mesa High School; Eva Danae Charidas, Estancia High School; Joanne Hong and Won Kyung (Sally) Oh, Irvine High School; Natalie Cernius and Emma Peplow, Newport Harbor High School; Rui Jing Jiang and Philine Qian, Northwood High School; Staphany Hou and Jessica Shin, University High School; Gabrielle Bozmarov and Tiffany Hu, Woodbridge High School.

These young women are in the top of their class academically and are active in numerous extracurricular activities. They demonstrate high moral character and show strong leadership abilities. These attributes are criteria set by the American Legion Auxiliary nationwide.

Girls State is a one-week conference in which young women study local, county and state government processes. Approximately 500 young women attend from throughout the state. Girls State helps young women develop leadership skills, confidence and poise while learning about their duties as United States citizens.

Still time to enroll

The Costa Mesa Senior Center computer classes for adults over 50 began April 8, and they are still accepting enrollements. The classes are two hours long. The maximum number of students is eight, with a coach for every two students. This includes supervised lab times with individual help. The beginning computer class is four weeks. All other classes are eight weeks. Aside from beginning classes on the computer, classes in digital photo editing, spreadsheets, Windows 7, the Internet and email and Printshop are offered. The cost for the four-week class is $30, and the cost of the eight-week classes for CMSC members is $50 ($20 per year to join) and $60 for all others. Call (949) 645-2356 for additional information.
