Service Clubs gaining new members

A.J. Thielen, president of the Rotary Club of Newport-Balboa, reports that six new members have joined in recent months. Those joining the Thursday evening Rotary Club meetings are Diane Daruty, who was sponsored by Dan Hoffmann; Dave Hodges and Laina Sullivan, who were sponsored by Thielen; and Jerry Klemmer, who was sponsored by Bill Hossfeld. Also, former member Richard Oberreiter has rejoined the club. According to Thielen, two more potential members will be inducted shortly.

Not to be outdone, Mike Scheafer, president of the Costa Mesa-Newport Harbor Lions Club, reports that the Multiple District Lions convention in Sacramento announced good news for his club. It was recognized as one of the top 20 Lions Clubs in California for membership growth. Rumor has it it was actually in the top five clubs for net member growth.

Hootenanny at Oasis

The Oasis Senior Center in Newport Beach hosts a free Sing & Pick Hootenanny Group that meets from 1 to 3 p.m. Fridays, excluding holidays. The members welcome anyone who is retired and interested in singing and playing American folk, bluegrass, country, blues and jazz songs to come join them.

They accompany themselves with their acoustic guitars, banjos, mandolins and fiddles and hope someday to add a bass or wash-tub bass player. Regular attendance is not expected, and anyone interested in being part of such a group is welcome to visit. For additional information, call Millard MacAdam, volunteer facilitator of the group, at (949) 644-5552.
