Community & Clubs: Celebrating philanthropy, Italian style
Cindy Dole and Marena Padden, grade-level advisors of the Newport Chapter of the National Charity League, hosted an event this week at the newly opened Hood Kitchen Space in Costa Mesa.
More than 30 of the chapter’s eighth-grade girls participated in an interactive cooking class led by Italian chef Marco Palazzo. The menu featured Italian regional cuisine. The venue was perfect for this mother-daughter evening and allowed the group ample space for the cooking demonstration and dining.

Homeless in Orange County
The Feb. 20 luncheon of the Newport-Mesa-Irvine Interfaith Council will feature Karen Roper, interim executive director of the O.C. Commission to End Homelessness, speaking on “Partnering with the Faith-Based Community in Ending Homelessness in Orange County.” Orange County Supervisor John Moorlach chairs the O.C. Commission to End Homelessness.
The luncheon, which is open to all faith communities and the public, will be held at Our Lady Queen of Angels Catholic Church, 2046 Mar Vista Drive, Newport Beach, beginning at 11:45 a.m., with registration followed by lunch, the presentation by Roper and tour of the new house of worship facilities of Our Lady Queen of Angels. Going to Antibes, France
The Newport Beach Sister City Assn. will host an informational meeting on a delegation trip to Antibes, France, at 6 p.m. Feb. 21 in the Friends Room in the Newport Beach Public Library, 1000 Avocado Ave., Newport Beach. If you are interested in being part of a delegation trip to Antibes, information about a July trip will be discussed. Antibes and Newport have had a sister-city relationship for 23 years. National Pancake Day
The Kiwanis Club of Costa Mesa participated with IHOP at 3125 Harbor Blvd., Costa Mesa in National Pancake Day on Feb. 5. They raised money for the Children’s Miracle Network and Children’s Hospital of Orange County. General Manager Benito Roman said the combined efforts of IHOP and Kiwanis raised more than $3,100 for the two charities. The Kiwanians that joined in were Jim Schabarum, 2012 - 2013 club president, Joe Panarisi, Adam Schuster, Jeff Dimsdale and Kent Mueller.

How Costa Mesa Got Its Name
Sunday’s meeting of the Costa Mesa Historical Society will feature author Marcia Lee Harris portraying Fanny Bixby Spencer, who, along with her husband, W. Carl Spencer, sponsored the contest that gave Costa Mesa its name. Harris wrote the book “Fanny Bixby Spencer: Long Beach’s Inspirational Firebrand.” Doors open at 2 p.m., program at 2:30 p.m. Free admission and refreshments.
