A group of Huntington Beach police officers took a man into custody Sunday after he was found yelling and naked in a flood control canal, according to a police statement on Facebook.

Authorities responded to a call around 4:15 p.m. Sunday of a man yelling and “dunking” himself in the water of a flood control canal near Beach Boulevard and Warner Avenue. Police said there were about 75 people filming and taking pictures of the man’s wild behavior.

The Huntington Beach Fire Department helped pull the man out of the canal using a basket gurney.

It took four officers and a sergeant to restrain the Huntington Beach resident, whose identity has not been released. According to police, the man tried fighting police and showed “unusual strength along with his bizarre behavior.”

The man was a suspect police were looking for earlier that day after receiving a call about a possible physical fight around 3:30 p.m. in the 7900 block of Moonshadow Circle, police said.

A man fled the location as police arrived after that incident, leaving behind a methamphetamine pipe and a BB gun on the patio of the house, police said.

The man is being evaluated by mental health professionals, Lt. Mitch O’Brien said in an email.

The statement by police added that criminal charges will be submitted to the Orange County District Attorney after an evaluation of the man is complete.

Authorities said officers have been to the Moonshadow Circle location “numerous times over the past two weeks for strange behavior involving this adult son of the family.”

The family told police that no one was injured and that their son was possibly under the influence of methamphetamines, according to police.
