Officials investigate death of woman in police custody

An autopsy is scheduled for a woman who died at Western Medical Center in Santa Ana while in police custody on suspicion of DUI.

Newport Beach police arrested Huntington Beach resident Charlotte Engle, 54, on Friday and took her to the Orange County Jail, according to the Orange County Sheriff-Coroner.

While being booked, Engle appeared to be suffering from high blood pressure and was taken to the hospital in Santa Ana, authorities said.

Her condition worsened over the next few days, and she was pronounced dead Sunday.

Because the woman died while in police custody, the Orange County district attorney plans to investigate the incident along with the Sheriff’s Department’s homicide unit.
