Family recognized for ‘green’ home

Russ and Susan Kadota received Huntington Beach’s annual Environmental Award in the residential category for remodeling their home to fit the standards of an energy-efficient and environmentally friendly community.

The Kadotas and their two children — who lived on the East Coast until recently, when they decided to join the rest of their family in California — wanted to remodel their home to accommodate multiple generations. Russ Kadota’s 84-year-old father also lives with the family.

“We are sort of believers of the cumulative effects of individual actions,” Russ Kadota, 47, said. “If everybody does a little bit, we can help with the big picture.”

Among the new features of the home on Elizabeth Lane were new insulation, new doors and windows, energy-efficient appliances and dual flush toilets. The house was also wired to run solar water, heating and electricity, Russ Kadota said.

Solar power systems have not been installed yet, but the family plans to do it as money becomes available. So far, the family spent about $400,000 to remodel the house, which included a new suite.

The family plans to move into the remodeled house later this month.

The Shipley Nature Center received the same award in the business/institutional category.
