John A. Scott
Rear Admiral John A. Scott, U.S. Navy (ret.) passed away on Wednesday, July 10 in Irvine, California. A native of Northern Ireland, Rear Admiral Scott was born on February 7, 1920 the son of William and Lily Scott. He graduated from San Pedro (California) High School, Whittier College, the Industrial College of the Armed Forces and the Graduate School of Business of Stanford University. He was commissioned in the Navy in 1942, retiring as a Rear Admiral in 1974 after a distinguished career in naval logistics. In 1943 he married the late Velma Ramsey. After naval service he was Senior Vice President of a national food service company and a college instructor. During his career, Rear Admiral Scott was honored by the Armed Forces Management Association as the Department of Defense Manager of the Year for 1971 and by Whittier College with its Alumni Achievement Award and also its Athletic Hall of Fame in 1997. He was past president of the Newport-Irvine Rotary Club; an elder at St. Andrews Presbyterian Church, Newport Beach; and a former member of the board of United Way and The Red Cross in Dayton, Ohio and Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. Rear Admiral Scott is survived by two daughters, Lyn Steinle of Orange, California and Deborah Gallagher of Reno, Nevada; six grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. Private internment in Newport Beach will be followed by a memorial service at St. Andrews Presbyterian Church on Tuesday, July 23 at 11 a.m. In lieu of flowers donations may be sent in RAdm.
