Robert Dressel Childs passed away at home on August 19, 2014 after a courageous battle with leukemia. Bob was born in Tulare, California on March 19, 1927 to Evelyn Dressel Childs and Edwin Robert Childs. The family moved to Santa Ana where Bob completed his kindergarten through junior college education. An avid sportsman throughout his entire life, Bob most loved football during his earlier years and played for Santa Ana High School, Santa Ana Junior College, and Stanford. Bob served in the Naval Air Corps from January 1945 through the summer of 1946, when he returned to Santa Ana Junior College and was elected freshman class president. Bob enrolled at Stanford in the fall of 1947, where he joined the Phi Kappa Psi fraternity and played defensive end and tackle for the Stanford football team.

It was at Stanford that Bob met Beverly Bond. They were married their senior year and graduated together in 1950. Bob earned his BA in Biology, followed by an MBA. The couple returned to Southern California where Bob worked in the insurance industry for more than 40 years. He was an active Stanford alumnus and chaired the Orange County Stanford Conference.

Bob’s knowledge and passion for history and the humanities took him on many adventurous travels worldwide, always with his wife, Bev, with their children, and finally with their grandchildren. His children, grandchildren, and all of their friends will remember Bob for his generosity, his enthusiasm, his love of the outdoors and his commitment to a physically active lifestyle. Bob is survived by his wife of 65 years, Beverly, his sister, Marian Greer, his children, Gail Omohundro (Tom), Blake Childs, Mike Childs (Cindy), his grandchildren Mark Omohundro, Amy Omohundro McNulty, Gavin Childs, and Aaron Childs, and his step-grandchildren Christine Andika and John Omohundro. He will be remembered and missed by many. The family is planning a private burial at sea.
